At the end of May, NCFL President & CEO Dr. Felicia C. Smith joined fellow members of the National Action Commission on stage at the Institute for Educational Leadership’s national conference to consider how alignment across schools, families, and communities can drive transformation and systemic impact.

One key takeaway: that education systems can better serve families and communities when treat Pre-K-12 and adult learning as interconnected, and create opportunities for multigenerational learning to occur.

What if every adult literacy program had access to proven strategies for reaching the learners who need them most? That's the vision behind Project RISE, the latest initiative from ALL IN: The Adult Literacy and Learning Impact Network.

📋 You can help by taking the Lower-Level Literacy Services Survey, which will help ALL IN identify programs with high levels of success recruiting and retaining low-literacy adult learners. Be sure to select "NCFL" on Question #6!

Last year, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Civic and Economic Literacy Survey found that 58% of participating adults failed a basic civics test—even as 74% of them reported confidence in their ability to explain how the U.S. government works.

⚖️ This gap between perceived and actual understanding underscores why civic literacy is essential.

NCFL's new guide, "Navigating the World: Incorporating Multiple Literacies through Family Literacy," offers concrete, ready-to-use strategies for embedding civic literacy (and other literacies!) directly into existing programs.

NCFL is part of ALL IN: The Adult Literacy and Learning Impact Network, which is launching Project RISE: A National Effort to Scale What Works. Project RISE is an initiative to collect proven strategies and resources to support lower-level learners and to share them with the field.

📖 Nearly 60 million adults in the U.S. perform at the lowest literacy levels. While many programs struggle to reach lower-level learners, some are succeeding at recruiting and retaining them on a meaningful scale.

Without stronger data, shared strategies, and collaboration, programs risk continuing to work in isolation—and learners remain underserved. This multi-phase national initiative will identify replicable, high impact strategies from exemplar programs and translate them into practical, field-facing tools that programs can apply locally.

We want to hear from you! 📋 Please take the survey linked here to support our efforts and to help us learn about programs that serve lower-level learners.

⭐ Don’t forget to select "NCFL" on Question 6!
