It’s hard to believe how much the cost of living has changed over the last two decades.

At a recent donor appreciation event, we shared a comparison of life in 2004 versus today. In Jefferson County and across Kentucky, home prices, utilities, and groceries have all roughly doubled. Meanwhile, Kentucky’s minimum wage has increased by just $2.10 per hour.

For too many families, these basic needs have become increasingly out of reach. This growing gap is why we continue to ensure every person has a pathway to stability, every family has food on the table, and everyone experiencing homelessness has an opportunity to rebuild their life with dignity. 💙

🚗🛞 We’re Officially Open!

The new drive-thru donation experience at our Dorsey Plaza Thrift Store (10280 Shelbyville Road) is now open and ready to serve you!

Instead of bringing donations to the front of the store, simply drive around to the back and let our team help unload your items under our covered canopy.

Drive-Thru Donation Directions (see rendering)
✅ From Shelbyville Rd., please turn onto S. Dorsey Lane into the back parking lot area.
✅ Follow directional signage to the covered canopy area at the back of the building.
✅ Staff or volunteers will assist you under the canopy to keep items protected from weather.
✅ After dropping off donations, please continue driving (rather than making a U-turn) and exit right onto S. Dorsey Lane.

🕓 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday

A bed might seem like a simple thing, but for 3-year-old S.J., it has made all the difference. 💙

“When my son got his own bed, he finally started sleeping on his own,” shared his father, Joshua. “Now, he loves it. He says, ‘Dad, my bed, my bed?’ He likes claiming it as his bed.”

Thanks to the partnership between the SVDP Conference at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Parish and our SVDP Louisville Thrift Stores, Joshua and his children were able to turn their apartment into a home. Together, they chose essential furniture, including beds for the children, a dining room table and chairs, a couch, and other household items. Conference members even helped load and unload everything in his apartment.

Sometimes, all it takes is furniture to help someone feel settled.

We appreciate the AP for spotlighting the growing housing challenges facing Louisville and the potential impact federal policy and funding changes could have on permanent supportive housing programs like ours.

At St. Vincent de Paul Louisville, our PSH units are a safety net for roughly 300 households each night. These are grandparents raising their grandchildren, single parents, women who successfully fled a domestic violence situation, and the elderly. Any disruption in funding directly threatens the well-being of those who are most vulnerable and rely on us for housing.

Please welcome Chelsea Cruz to our St. Vincent de Paul family💙

As our new Volunteer Engagement Coordinator, Chelsea brings a passion for community involvement and connecting people with meaningful opportunities.

Before starting at SVDP, Chelsea worked in workforce development with a local nonprofit, where she coordinated career and employer events and built partnerships that helped individuals achieve their goals. In her new role, she looks forward to finding new ways for individuals to get involved, making volunteering as welcoming and rewarding as possible, and continuing to build upon the incredible volunteer community that supports our mission every day.

Today, we're celebrating kitchen volunteer Rosanna Vessels for 10 years of service. As a theology and instructional technology at Saint Xavier High School, faith isn't just something Rosanna teaches, but something she lives out.💚💛

She began serving on her 50th birthday and has faithfully volunteered on Sundays at lunch ever since.

When asked why she serves, Rosanna shared, “It’s important to see the dignity of all people. That all people have a right to food, water, housing, and self-worth. To be a part of a mission where we treat individuals as human beings who have dignity and aren’t a burden to society.”

St. Vincent de Paul once said, “Make it a practice to judge persons and things in the most favorable light at all times and under all circumstances.” His life was transformed through serving the poor, and his legacy continues to inspire our mission at St. Vincent de Paul Louisville to house, feed, and support those in need with compassion and dignity.

A few facts about St. Vincent de Paul:
💙 Born in France in 1581 to a peasant family.
💙 His early years were driven by a desire for fame and fortune, but his faith led him to a life devoted to serving others.
💙 He became known as the patron saint of charitable organizations, helping establish ministries, hospitals, orphanages, and programs for the most vulnerable of France.

There is something special about gathering with others who share a commitment to serving our community. Thank you for those who joined us and for being part of an evening that reflected on the impact of Clubs & Cocktails over the past 22 years while looking ahead to all that is still to come.

Deacon Scott Haner said it best when he reminded us that those we serve are our friends. Whether it is a Food Pantry shopper or campus resident, we are all in this journey together.
