What a great turnout at yesterday’s quarterly Vincentian Mass, hosted by the St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Parish Conference!

Across our community, more than 600 Vincentians serve through 27 parish-based conferences, helping prevent homelessness and providing critical assistance with rent, food, clothing, and utility bills.

This line says it all. Before our Food Pantry opened at 9 a.m. earlier this week, the line of neighbors waiting for grocery assistance nearly reached Jackson Street. Compared to the previous fiscal year, we've experienced nearly a 40% increase in Food Pantry visits, highlighting the growing need in our community.

“Empathy is not about politics, it’s about being human.”

In this episode, George Eklund, Director of Education and Advocacy at the Coalition for the Homeless, and Liz McQuillen, Chief Policy Officer at Metro United Way, explore how housing advocacy and public policy can help shift people’s perspectives from apathy to empathy when addressing homelessness.

Liz and George discuss how housing organizations and community partners have collaborated more in recent years to create pathways to end homelessness through the “Safe & Stable: Housing for All” coalition. The conversation also covers Louisville’s latest homelessness data, recent progress in reducing unsheltered homelessness, and key housing investments included in the FY2027 Louisville Metro budget.

🥫 8,000 Pounds Collected! 🥫

When our Food Pantry shelves were running low, the SVDP Conference at St. Patrick Church of Louisville and Knights of Columbus Council answered the call. It was a busy month for our volunteers, who served roughly 480 unique families with an average of three visits per family in July. Thank you for keeping our shelves stocked and our neighbors fed!

"If it hadn't been for the Open Hand Kitchen, I don't know how I could survive."

After the latest USDA report ranked Kentucky as the 2nd most food-insecure state in the nation, WLKY News highlights how food insecurity may be impacting more households than ever before. In July alone, we served roughly 14,500 meals to those in need. That's a 30% increase from June.
