A family sent with Upstream serving in Western Europe shared how God continues to open small but significant doors through ordinary rhythms of life, especially through the relationships started by their kids. Consistent shared meals, conversations with neighbors, and park play dates have allowed for less skepticism and more openness spiritually.

They asked for prayer for endurance, spiritual encouragement, and deeper relationships in a context where many people have little familiarity with the gospel.

This Memorial Day, many of us will gather around tables, grills, front porches, and backyards.

Surrounded by friends, neighbors, and family, we will share meals and tell stories. May we not miss the opportunity to be intentional with the people God has placed around us.

Sometimes mission starts much closer than we think.

A thoughtful question.
A meaningful conversation.
An act of hospitality.
A moment to speak hope and truth about Jesus.

Upstream President Larry McCrary and his wife, Susan, recently had the opportunity to worship at their original sending church, First Baptist Concord, and reconnect with many old friends.

That morning, they heard men and women now in their late 70s and 80s recount the day they laid hands on their family and sent them out. Decades later, they still remember, care, and pray.

It was a reminder that church sending is not a momentary event, but a long-term partnership. Healthy sending churches don’t just commission missionaries. They continue walking with them for the long haul.

In a rapidly changing world, it can be easy to feel anxious about the future of missions, the church, or global sending.

But the mission of God is not hanging in the balance of human effort. Jesus is reigning, interceding, and sustaining his mission even now.

That means we can labor faithfully, send boldly, and go confidently—not because circumstances feel stable, but because Christ is seated on the throne.

May we be people who lift our eyes and look to Jesus.

Not every missionary is sent the same way—but every missionary needs strong support, healthy leadership, and a sending church committed to the mission.

At Upstream, we help churches send people cross-culturally through three distinct pathways: our Field Network, Church-Specific Sending, and the Marketplace.

Whether serving on a team, partnering with global workers, or leveraging a profession overseas, each pathway is designed to help missionaries thrive for the long haul.

We’re excited to welcome Kate to the Upstream team as our new Engagement Manager! 🎉

Kate will be helping lead outbound marketing, manage inquiries, support website updates, coordinate book distribution, and more as we continue equipping churches to send well.

Originally from Missouri, Kate brings more than a decade of global missions experience, having served with her husband in India and the Czech Republic since 2013.

When she’s not building connections and supporting churches, you’ll likely find Kate and her family exploring new places and cultures, hunting for treasures at garage sales, and enjoying a good cup of coffee.

We celebrate the ones who go. The ones who follow the call, cross oceans, and serve boldly. But this Mother’s Day, let’s not forget the ones who stay.

The moms who quietly carry the weight of distance, fear, and love—all at once. If you know a missionary mama, this is your chance to remind her she’s seen, too.

The Missionary Mama’s Survival Guide is a companion for the road she didn’t expect to walk.

We recently heard that one of our sending churches ends every service with these words:
“You are loved. You are sent.”

What would it look like for that kind of identity to shape the rhythm of every church, not just believing in missions, but living as people sent every single week?

Our hope is to support churches where people walk out the doors knowing exactly who they are as sent ones and why it matters.
