A child watched as her mother was gunned down, left to die as they held hands walking to the bus stop.
Councilwoman Tammy Hawkins said it best, “what do you think this child’s state of mind will be once she grows up.“
That baby is now 50% more likely to commit a violent crime, ONLY because of this experience that was no fault or choice of her own.
How do we stop her, and other children who lose a parent from becoming a part of the cycle of violence?
WE SUPPORT THE PARENTS! We support the person who will now raise this baby in absence of her mother. It may the father, the grandmother, the auntie - but whoever it is will need support! This baby girl will need support.
And I don’t mean extra-curricular activities and summer camp. They are grieving a loss. The surviving parent will need grief support to mentally be in a space to raise the child. They’ll need financial support after losing a primary parent. They will need peer support as birthdays and holidays pass to prevent them from falling into complicated grief, depression or substance-use to cope.
Without strong, stable, knowledgable parents/guardians we CANNOT have full impact on youth!
This is the purpose in
Supporting parents through trauma so they can properly support and care for their children. PREVENTION STARTS AT HOME! WE HAVE TO SUPPORT HOUSEHOLDS, NOT JUST YOUTH!
We are lifting everyone who has experienced loss in our city this week. We are here to collaborate with any organization seeking to support to ensure blossom into flowers 🌹 and not weeds 🌱
