Coalition for the Homeless

Coalition for the Homeless Our mission is to prevent and end homelessness in Louisville through advocacy, education, and coordination of our member agencies.

The Coalition for the Homeless' mission is to prevent and end homelessness in Louisville. Our 30+ member agencies provide housing, food, clothing, healthcare, and legal services to people experiencing homelessness—from veterans living on the streets to families living out of their cars. Our job is to fight for people experiencing homelessness and for housing justice by implementing both immediate

and long-term solutions. We do this work by advocating for change, educating the public, and collaborating with our partners.

The Coalition is hosting three events at the Moreman Gallery at 710 West Main Street, Level 2, to educate on myths vs. facts about homelessness, lived experience storytelling, and a highlight of a member agency's boots-on-the ground work. These three special events are done in collaboration with Edward "Nardie" White. All three events will offer the same content and will be free, but require separate RSVPs.

The first event will be held this Thursday, August 6, from 1-3pm! Please see details and RSVP here: https://secure.everyaction.com/nBPWcWodI06v4ydXAK7Axw2.

It was an honor to attend the ribbon cutting of the new Unity House at Volunteers of America Mid-States on Thursday. With its opening, we have 20 new units of emergency shelter for Louisville families!

Our Executive Director, Natalie Harris, spoke about how every Friday afternoon, she gets an email about how many families are on our shelter waitlist, sleeping outdoors or in their cars—and how the new Unity House will bring us one step closer to the waitlist being at zero.

She also talked about how much more we need: not just shelter, but supportive services and housing. We will continue to push for increases in funding and resources, and encourage the community to do the same, even as we celebrate this incredible new resource for Louisville families.

It’s a beautiful day to celebrate truly affordable housing made possible by the American Rescue Plan! 👏🏡🔑

In 2021, Louisvillians told our elected officials that housing and homelessness must be a priority with these federal funds, and our local leaders listened: Mayor Fischer and Metro Council allocated $72 million for hundreds of new affordable and supportive housing units targeted for the poorest Louisvillians across our city.

Today we stood in front of one of those projects—the Iroquois Senior Living Community—and celebrated that work while knowing we have to fund more units for the future to maintain our tremendous progress.

So today as we celebrate our past investments, let’s also send a message in support of our work in the future: https://ujoin.co/campaigns/4439/actions/public?action_id=6814.

June is a time to celebrate identity, community, and love. Unfortunately, there are many barriers that many members of the LGBTQ+ community still face.

According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, up to 40% of young people experiencing homelessness identify as LGBTQ+, twice as many as in the overall youth population. This disproportionate number hides within it stories of family rejection, discrimination, and systems that too often fail our most vulnerable neighbors.

No young person should have to choose between being who they are and having a safe place to sleep. We're grateful to many members of our Coalition who work daily to promote dignity without judgment.

Ending homelessness isn’t just a goal—it’s a proven investment.

Every $1 we invest in supportive services saves taxpayers $2.50 by reducing the strain on emergency rooms and local jails.

Metro Council held its budget hearing today, and still, our coalition is pushing for a full commitment to the housing continuum. We need the Mayor’s proposed wins for homeless services to be matched by a proactive Housing Stabilization Fund.

Don't let this budget cycle end without your input. We are in the home stretch!

We have good news: the proposed FY2027 budget has meaningful investments in housing across the continuum. Homeless services, down payment assistance, and the Louisville Affordable Housing Trust Fund all have substantial funding in the current budget proposal.
