Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development of People "People Investing in People"

The Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development of People (SDOP) is a ministry of Presbyterians and ecumenical partners dissatisfied with poverty and oppression that participates in the empowerment of economically poor, oppressed and disadvantaged communities. SDOP provides grants to low income community groups working towards poverty alleviation through projects they own and directly benefit from.

Rev. Wayne Steele was a member of the National Committee of the Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development of People during 2017-2024 and has been an advocate for SDOP's ministry through the years. We are saddened with the news of his passing. Our prayers for Rev. Wayne Steele's family and Friends.

Rev. Wayne Steele’s family has arranged a brief Celebration of Life Service this Friday, October 2, 2026, at Community Missionary Baptist Church at 4909 East Indian Trail, Louisville, KY 40218.

Visitation: 5:00–7:00 p.m.
Brief Celebration of Life Service: 7:00–7:30 p.m.

A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will take place in Rev. Steele’s hometown of New Orleans on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

SDOP is very proud of their partnership with Panamanian groups. One of these groups is Morrillo Community, who was funded in 2024. After the community’s economy was severely affected by the pandemic, the whole community gathered to generate alternative sources of income, mainly focused on ecotourism, and preservation of sea turtles. The project seeks, among other things, to build accessibility infrastructure in the turtle visitor center to increase the pool of potential visitors. The Panamanian National TV recently aired this video, which shows one of the activities aimed at conserving sea turtles and control pollution. Last February a team from the National Offices of the Presbyterian Church(PDA, Hunger, SDOP, Dianna Wright, Mission Director), and the former Co-moderator, Cecelia Armstrong, visited this center, and were very impressed with the work of this center and community. Recently Julia Hill, Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development (SDOP) & Northeast Task Force Chair along with fellow NE Task Force member Rachel Sawan White visited St. John Presbyterian Church in New Albany, Indiana. They were warmly received by the church’s senior pastor Rev. Allen Colwell and the congregation. Their visit was in conjunction with National SDOP’s committee meeting in Louisville, KY, 09/17-19.

The two shared a presentation on the SDOP mandate & how One Great Hour of sharing funds are received and allocated at the local (mid council) and national levels. Rachel shared on one of SDOP’s recently funded community partners Immigrant Women’s Academy (originally a part of Ulster Immigrant Defense Network

also previously awarded a SDOP grant). The congregation was encouraged to establish a local SDOP committee within their presbytery to support local community needs.
