Paws with Purpose

Founded in 2003, Paws with Purpose is a non-profit organization that provides Assistance Dogs as par Puppies begin their training at 8 weeks of age.

Paws with Purpose places Assistance Dogs within the Louisville and Southern Indiana area. They are trained by a select group of inmates at the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women during the week and volunteers in the community take the puppies for the weekend to socialize them to the outside world.

⚽️🐾 World Cup fever has officially hit Paws With Purpose!

Some of our dogs have temporarily traded in their training vests for Team USA jerseys to cheer on the red, white, and blue. We're paws-itively rooting for goals, glory, and post game treats.

Our "P" litter is now 8 weeks old and growing quickly!

These future assistance and facility dogs may be small now, but they but have big futures ahead of them. Over the coming months and years, they'll learn the skills needed to provide comfort, support, independence, and companionship to the people who need them most.

It is with great sadness that we share the loss of retired facility dog, Travis. Travis was a Paws With Purpose dog who faithfully served at U of L Hospital for more than seven years.

His career began in the outpatient physical therapy clinic, helping patients complete their exercises with encouragement, comfort, and a wagging tail. Following the retirement of his handler, Travis continued his calling in the hospital, visiting patients and families to provide emotional support during some of life’s most difficult moments. He spent a significant amount of time with trauma and palliative care patients, often offering quiet companionship through his gentle presence. Following the tragic National Bank shooting, Travis was called upon to comfort police officers and families, offering his calm presence during an incredibly difficult time.

Travis will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.

Last week, several of our dogs met with Bear Scout Pack 154 to help them earn their Critter Badge. The scouts learned about Paws with Purpose and how assistance and facility dogs benefit the community. Thanks for inviting us!
