Civic Data Alliance

Civic Data Alliance we are focused on advocating for inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, openness and transparency in civic tech, open data and gov tech Thank you!

Louisville’s Code for America Brigade was founded in December of 2012 by Michael Schnuerle after partnering with Louisville Metro since 2010 to open crime, restaurant, and permit data, creating interactive maps for the city, and advising on the city’s open data portal launch. On September 2013, the Civic Data Alliance was created by Patrick Smith, Bret Walker, Chris Harrell and Michael Schnuerle t

o be a voice for citizens. The CDA was merged with the Louisville Brigade in May 2014 when it became a Member CfA Brigade. In December 2014 we reached official Brigade status with Code for America. As of June 2015, over 300 people and volunteers have participated in our hackathons, meetups, and events. We’ve had 14 meetups, run 7 hackathons, worked on 29 civic public projects, and donated over 6,000 hours of volunteer time to the community!

Posted • Just like other major cities, Louisville has a impacted youth violence crisis. Just like other cities we had unconscionable violent youth death and crimes. For some, it is clear what the issue is- for others it looks like $$$ Our local youth detention center is being turnt over to the state and closing. What does this mean? NO ONE KNOWS not even the Secretary of the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet. This decison was made WITH NO PLAN IN PLACE. What is also upsetting is that these families, families who call out to us when no solutions are found all have the same background: little to no income, food apartheid neighborhoods, special needs family members, family members in prison, high evictions. This morming one of the SWs who we work w/ let us know 5 youths will be shipped out to ??? LOOK: THE STATE IS NOT WHERE LOUISVILLE YOUTH NEED TO GO

4/5 are Black males and most times the detention center is 100% Black. This is a call to urgent action!

We've gotten a new youth Bail Out with a $5K bail. We do not want to see this baby out in Kentucky. This is just one solution.
One way.

Enjoying this read about Kranzberg's Six Laws. The first one really jumps out. “Technology is neither good nor bad; nor is it neutral.”

Dr. Melvin Kranzberg was a professor of the history of technology at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the founding editor of Technology and Culture. In 1985, he delivered the presidential ad…

All the Data for We the People

The Civic Data Alliance (CDA) is Louisville’s Code for America Brigade and we are focused on advocating for inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, openness and transparency in civic tech and open data, interested in liberating, improving, gathering, defining, and reporting on public data and the state of civic tech, while fostering an inclusive and diverse civic tech community.

We are the public's voice for open data, interested in liberating, improving, gathering, defining, and reporting on public data. We help coordinate volunteers, push open data policy, host meet-ups and hackathons, host and format open data, and provide tech support for local citizens. As members of the data community, we believe it is imperative to create avenues for our greater Louisville community to understand, implement, and manipulate open data.

We want to be a force for educating the general public on what open data is and how it can be used for our community. CDA advocates for openness and transparency in data from our government and for these same principles in our government itself, including it's officials, actions, policies, procedures and departments. Part of advocating for and being an open and transparent civic organization is advocating for openness and transparency in all civic areas, not just the data.

Open Data. Open Government. For the People, by the People.
