Health and Human Services says it's decertifying Kentucky's organ donation organization over patient safety failures- including cases where, according to federal reviewers, "the organ donation process began before a patient had died."

That line alone sounds damning.

💙💚 National Multiethnic Donor Awareness Month 💚💙

This month, we recognize the importance of increasing organ, eye, and tissue donation awareness in multiethnic communities and celebrate the lives changed through the gift of donation.

Meet Shane.

After living with type 1 diabetes for more than 30 years, Shane's kidneys began to fail, and he started dialysis. Every evening at 8 p.m., dialysis became part of his family's routine. His wife transformed their bedroom into a home dialysis clinic and became his biggest source of strength, reminding him, "Baby, we've got this."

For two years, Shane held onto hope while waiting for a simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant. After two calls that didn't result in a transplant, he never gave up.

Then, on January 26, 2025, while singing in his church choir, the call finally came: "Mr. Crow, we have a match."

Because of the selfless decision of a 20-year-old donor and their family, Shane received a kidney and a pancreas—freeing him from dialysis and diabetes and giving him a second chance at life.

Today, Shane shares this message:

"Make a choice that is bigger than yourself. Be a donor. Join the Kentucky Organ Donor Registry."

Your decision to register as an organ donor could give someone else the chance to keep being a parent, spouse, friend, or community leader.

August is National Multiethnic Donor Awareness Month (NMDAM) – a collaborative effort to save lives and improve the quality of life for diverse communities by fostering a positive culture around organ, eye and tissue donation.

Why is NMDAM needed?
60% of patients on the national transplant waiting list are from multicultural communities. The need for donation and transplant is more pronounced in minority communities where disproportionately higher rates of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease contribute to organ failure, especially kidney failure.

💚💙 Happy International Friendship Day! 💙💚

Today, we celebrate the friendships that carry us through life's greatest challenges and brightest moments. At the TCH Caregivers Heart Support Group, those friendships become a source of strength, hope, and healing for caregivers who understand the unique journey of supporting a loved one through heart transplantation.

For Vicki Sloat, whose husband Bruce is a heart transplant recipient, the support group has become much more than a monthly meeting, it has become family.

George, along with all of the wonderful group members are so kind, supportive, understanding, and uplifting. Attending these meetings is like a bridge to my wellness, helping me maintain peace in my life.
