The Pete Foundation

The Pete Foundation Empowering youth in their pursuit of a happy, mentally healthy life, free from the internal conflict and confusion brought on by depression and anxiety.

We are a community of vested individuals on a mission to empower today’s youth in their pursuit of a happy, mentally healthy life, free from the internal conflict and confusion brought on by depression and anxiety. Changes in the way society views and accepts mental illness allow us to understand our personal struggles and give us the means to seek support. In targeting today’s youth, we will achi

eve our goal through open communication, cooperation, and understanding of these issues within families, communities, and nations for tomorrow. The Jones Family created The Pete Foundation for Depression Prevention after their beloved Pete took his life at the age of 23 on December 9, 2016. It was a day of tragedy and disbelief that so many families around the world have endured. The Jones Family decided to invest their efforts toward ensuring that no person would have to suffer silently in the way Pete suffered for 10 years. It struck them that Pete was only able to convey the depth of his pain in a letter discovered after his death.

As we wrap up Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re proud to support our friends at the Pete Foundation and their Big Steps in Mental Health campaign.

When we talk openly about mental health and educate ourselves and others, we can save lives. Let’s continue looking out for ourselves and our neighbors.

As always, call or text 988 for help. Sign up for the program at: https://www.thepetefoundation.org/about-big-steps-in-mental-health

Next Tuesday marks the 14th year of Kentucky Gives Day - an annual fundraising initiative from the Kentucky Nonprofit Network to help increase visibility around local nonprofits. The Pete Foundation is excited to participate in this program once again, but we need your help!

Please consider donating to The Pete Foundation next Tuesday at the link below to help us continue our mission of championing mental health and wellness, through education, advocacy and engagement. By donating on May 12, you give us the chance to win prizes that will further boost visibility and resources for The Pete Foundation.

P.S. If you won’t be able to donate next Tuesday (or are worried you’ll forget 😉) you can still donate any time before May 13!

We’ve been proud to share the history and the impact of The Mental Health flag - but a symbol is only as strong as the support behind it. Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing ways you can help us bring The Mental Health Flag to more communities and spaces and directly support our mission of showing that Mental Health is Health!

In keeping with our focus on community engagement, The Pete Foundation is proud to be attending an educational event at Bellarmine University here in Louisville. The event, titled “Adolescent Mental Health in Community”, will be focused on strengthening adolescent mental health through connection, support, and meaningful change. In addition to attending the event, we have several board members who are honored to participate on the panel.

Stay tuned next week for updates on key learnings and additional ways to support this mission we picked up at this event!

Nobody should have to advocate for mental health alone. The Mental Health Flag acts as a rallying point for everyone to advocate for the parts of mental health awareness that matter to them - whether you are an ally, a healthcare worker, or someone living through your own mental health journey.

To further expand on this, the Pete Foundation created our Ribbon Rapport project. At various community events, we encourage people to add a color-coded advocacy ribbon to our Mental Health Flag depending on the mental illness they, or someone they know, have experienced or are still struggling with. This colorful collection of ribbons creates the story for the larger community - a story of understanding, resiliency, and hope.

It’s time to move mental health out of the shadows. As the Mental Health Flag becomes a more common sight across neighborhoods, businesses, and social feeds, we strip away the shame long associated with mental health struggles. Visibility is the first step toward stomping the stigma.
