Imagination Library of Louisville

Imagination Library of Louisville Our mission is to provide free books to Louisville children in an effort to foster a love of reading and better prepare them for kindergarten.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Louisville was founded in 2016 through a partnership between the Junior League of Louisville, WAVE 3 News and the Jefferson County Public Education Foundation. Its mission is to put more books in the hands of Jefferson County children in an effort to foster a child’s love of reading and prepare them for kindergarten. We believe that by improving early educatio

n in our community, we can contribute to the lifelong success of Jefferson County children. Beginning in January 2017, children who are enrolled will receive a free book in the mail every month after enrollment until their 5th birthday. The books are addressed to them, and are theirs to keep in order to help families build a library in their home at no cost. Each year, a committee of early childhood education experts selects age appropriate books that work to bring families together and create a culture of reading.

This program can be instrumental to the success of kids in Jefferson County, where nearly half of all children do not enter kindergarten ready to learn. And early success predicts future success, as nearly two-thirds of students who reach the fourth grade without proficient reading skills end up in welfare or in prison. We believe that future is unacceptable for our children, and are working to directly change the outcome through the Imagination Library.

In its first year, it will serve up to 500 children under the age of 5 who live in the 40202, 40203 and 40208 zip codes. Everyone in those zip codes, regardless of family income, is welcome to participate. Community partners would like to see the program expand to include every zip code in Jefferson County.

The Imagination Library of Louisville is made possible thanks to Delta Dental, the Rotary Club of Louisville and other generous sponsors.

Did you know reading during the summer can help children hold onto important learning skills between school years?

Just 15 minutes of reading a day helps strengthen vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence while keeping young minds active and engaged.

Small reading routines today can make a big difference when school starts again.

June is Summer Reading Month, and there’s no better time to make reading part of your family’s summer fun.

Whether it’s bedtime stories, poolside books, or reading under the stars, even a few minutes a day helps children build confidence and keep learning all summer long.

This season, let stories be part of the adventure.

Every child has a story waiting to be told.

It grows with every book they hear, every question they ask, and every moment spent reading together.

This month, we’ve celebrated the power of stories to connect families, spark imagination, and shape how children see the world.

Let’s keep those stories going.

Our council members are currently building the budget for the next year and we're working hard to secure a place in it for Imagination Library of Louisville so we can continue sending a free, high quality, age-appropriate monthly book to thousands of Louisville kids.

The most powerful advocates we have are people like you. Please take a few minutes to contact your local council member and share what this program means to you and your family. Your story matters!

You can find your councilperson at https://apps.lojic.org/metrocouncildistricts/. Spread the word by sharing this post with your friends and family!

Stories are not just found in books. They are all around us.

In the flowers blooming outside.
In a trip to the grocery store.
In a walk around the neighborhood.

Talking about what you see, hear, and experience helps children build language, curiosity, and understanding of the world.

This week, turn an everyday moment into a story. Describe what you notice, ask questions, and let your child add their own ideas.

The simplest moments often become the most meaningful stories.
