Daniel Cressy, a 23 year old New Orleans man, became the first person in Louisiana to be functionally cured of sickle cell disease via groundbreaking CRISPR gene therapy. This landmark achievement allows him to pursue his dream of becoming a commercial pilot, a goal previously unattainable due to the disease.

The two year journey involved extracting Cressy’s stem cells, editing them in a lab using Casgevy CRISPR technology to produce healthy red blood cells, and reintroducing them. The procedure was performed at Manning Family Children's Hospital in New Orleans by a team led by Dr. Ben Watkins.

Doctors confirmed the disease is no longer active in his system.
