In a healthy and fair ag economy, farmers can be independent and sell to a variety of buyers. But major corporations have dominated the market. Contract farmers are completely beholden to their integrators.

The contract system works exactly as it was meant to. It fails farmers and workers in order to boost profits for shareholders and executives. We need a food system that’s equitable and sustainable.

Millions for CEOs. Debt for farmers.

The average contract chicken grower is drowning in debt. Many farmers have taken out hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans to build or buy barns to secure contracts.

Beginning farmers are promised they will earn enough to pay off their loans. But that often isn’t the case. An Arkansas grower had less than a year left on his contract when Tyson canceled it. He was left with $1.4 million in debt and faces bankruptcy.

Our farmers deserve better. We need to build a system that prioritizes farmers over shareholder profits.

Small farms matter!

Creekmore’s Place is a specialty crop farm run by Sharon and Dion, rooted in a family legacy of feeding their community. Sharon’s parents farmed the same land she works today, and she carries that commitment forward.

Sharon and Dion aren’t just growing food. They’re caring for the land, educating their community, creating connections around food, and building something to pass on to the next generation.

Like most farmers, they face their share of challenges. But their commitment to feeding their community runs deep, and that purpose keeps them going, even on the hardest days.

After three generations and 69 years as dairy farmers, the Hamilton family lost their only milk buyer when faced with the option to “get big or get out.” They made the difficult decision to close their operation and began exploring alternatives.

Then they found Transfarmation. Through an R&I grant, we helped them convert their former dairy parlor into a mushroom-growing operation. They sold about 215 pounds of specialty mushrooms in their first year!

Reflecting on being forced to close the dairy, Paula Hamilton said, “You have to look at this as maybe a blessing in disguise.”

Paula is now a strong advocate for creating off-ramps for farmers facing the loss of their farms due to corporate consolidation. “It empowers you to a certain extent,” she told Transfarmation. “You kind of feel like, ‘Maybe I am helping change someone’s mind or helping do something.’”

What does farm viability look like in challenging times?

At the National Farm Viability Conference, farmers and the organizations that support them came together to share ideas, experiences, and actionable solutions for building more resilient farms.

Our own Megan Hunter joined a panel featuring real-world case studies, highlighting the Hamilton Farm and how Transfarmation helps farmers transition away from factory farming and build sustainable, independent operations.

Because farmers deserve more than a system that tells them to get big or get out. They deserve a future where their farms can thrive.
