Our PAPSS (pregnant and parenting student support) students took their exams and will wait a couple months for results.
Zambia’s educational system required testing in grades 7 and 9, and if a student did not pass all of their subjects, they had to retake the exams the next year without moving forward to the next grade. Lots of $$ fees were included to retake the exams.

That cycle of retesting could go on and on and on until a student passed all of their subjects. It became a huge hindrance to many students, and so often, many of those students would never return to school if they failed one or more of their subjects.
Imagine having a baby to care for on top of all that stress! 🥺
Thankfully, Zambia is ending that mandatory testing for those grades.

The PAPSS program coordinator organized a special day for the students, filled with good food and fun games, to send them on their way as they wait for their results.

We are loooooong overdue for a social media post. ⌛️
But you know what? Behind this social media page, we are human beings, and for us at S3Z especially, we are a very small organization trying to do our best in the place God has placed us. 🙏🏽

So with that said, we took a few months to reflect, to pray, to analyse and evaluate, and to look deeply into a few aspects of our organization and our partner organization.
As most organizations must do from time to time, we’ve been implementing some changes.

We are also happy to say that the PAPSS program that was started in February this year for the pregnant and parenting female students at the school is going exceptionally well. 🎉
The progam coordinator, the staff, and the teachers are working hard to make it succesful. đź©·

✨Several of the 16 student mothers enrolled in the program are taking exams this week to determine if they can move on to the next grade level. They would love your prayers for great test results. 📖💯🙏🏽

We greatly appreciate our regular financial donors, those who pray for us regularly, and all those who read our posts as we navigate the journey of being a US based nonprofit organization working internationally in order to bring educational access to marginalized and vulnerable youth. 🇿🇲

We worked really, really hard the past five weeks at implementing the PAPSS program for pregnant and parenting female students at the secondary school that we had been developing for the past year.

A lot of planning with sweat, laughs and even tears at the end.
The student mothers and their babies are in good hands!

These ladies deserve some applause 👏🏽

When I captured this moment, I knew I was capturing something that wouldn’t be visible in the photo.

This young lady has lost both of her parents.
A few weeks ago, she was sitting in her 9th grade class at her previous school, trying to pay attention. She had left her baby with a babysitter but the babysitter had walked to the school and was now standing outside the class window with this young lady’s crying baby, who was hungry and wanted to nurse.

The school told her she could not continue coming to school if there was no way for her baby to be cared for during school hours.
So she left.

Her grandfather heard what happened, so he made it his mission to go from school to school to school, trying to find a place that she might be able to attend while also juggling the responsibilities of being a mother.

He happened to walk into the office at the school we support, and he mentioned his granddaughter’s dilemma and how he could not allow her to drop out of school.

He didn’t have any idea that this school was just getting ready to open a program for parenting female students.

They told me he was so surprised and couldn’t even believe what he was hearing.

This young lady is now sitting in class learning.
She will finish her secondary school education if we have anything to with it!

So, In this photo, the program coordinator is telling her that if she has any problems, she needs to let her and the caregivers know, and not to keep all her problems to herself. She is telling her that they are there for her.

She has gained some mothers.

When I met this young lady 5 weeks ago, she was depressed, didn’t have many friends, and was nervous and afraid for her future and her baby.

Now, I see her laughing and smiling, and she has a teen-mother community that she has bonded with at the school.

It’s truly remarkable.

Mother Sarah.
That’s what we call her.
She is one of the PAPSS child caregivers.

Sarah can fit more than two on her lap and can also have one under each arm at the same time. I’ve seen it!
She is calm with the new children who aren’t used to being in a group setting.

She always knows what the babies want, and their mothers know that their children are in good hands with Sarah

We have bonded.
That’s the price you pay when you get involved.

And when oceans separate you and time passes by, all you can do is pray for them and support them the best you can. 🌍🌏
❤️💔❤️

The PAPSS program concluded their second week today! 🎊
The “founding” babies, as we affectionately call them, have settled in, just like baby T on my back. She has chosen her favorite caregivers, and she has become a happy baby during the day. I’m not her favorite, but she had to deal with me while her favorite was occupied.
The new babies and toddlers that came this week are still adjusting to being away from their mothers while their mothers are in class, but they are also learning that mom always comes back to pick them up.

In the midst of opening the PAPSS program for our parenting students, we organized a major landscaping and planting day to beautify the school grounds.

It’s amazing what some greenery can do to lift the face of the school!

These plants and trees are a powerful reminder of the potential for positive change and growth.

Day 2 of Pregnant and Parenting Student Support (PAPSS).

Most of the children are adjusting well, while others are taking a little time to warm up to this new environment with new baby friends and caregivers. 👧🏽👦🏾

The children are in a safe space, they are eating, and are being lovingly carried on the backs of our caretakers.

Breastfeeding mothers are coming at break time to breastfed their babies and quickly return to class.

This program has clear policies and we have high expectations for those who have been accepted into the program.

We have designed PAPSS to empower each student mother so that at the very least, she can attain her secondary school education and have the possibility of going further one day.

One of our PAPSS student mothers was previously denied education at another local school due to her circumstances, but she has refused to let adversity hold her back from attaining what she is capable of.

Can you imagine being forced to leave school because you don’t have childcare? It is very common.

We will help who we can, and pray that God gives us wisdom as we move forward with this program.

Today was so full of busyness and excitement. Lots of new things are happening at the school.

The school has instituted Prefects!

For those not familiar with this type of school leadership, you might ask “what are prefects”?

Prefects are students who can set an example for others in discipline, academics, sports & other activities.
They are given a limited authority over the other pupils in school.
Being a prefect helps them to develop a sense of responsibility towards their juniors, while also developing leadership qualities.

Wearing different colored ties with their uniform from what the rest of the student population wears will set them apart. đź‘”

Let’s see what happens after they put those ties on!🫡

In November 2023, Agness was a pregnant teenage student sitting at a desk writing her grade 9 national exams when she went into labor.

She walked herself to the clinic and thankfully gave birth to a healthy baby girl, who she named Success.

The very next day, she left the clinic because she didn’t want to miss writing the rest of her exams. She was determined, however she was exhausted and couldn’t finish.

She was so scared that her educational future had come to an end. She didn’t see a way forward. She was now set back for at least a year until she could take those same exams again.

Her mother refused to force her into an early marriage. She was extremely worried about Agness’ future, yet she and the grandmother and the great grandmother gave her their unconditional support.

Agness’ story highlighted the issue that many teenage student mothers face.
Thousands, yes, thousands of parenting female students drop out of school every year in Zambia.

Our secondary school decided we would do something about the issue.

After more than a year spent in planning, today we opened the Pregnant and Parenting Student Support Program ( PAPSS) at Mapalo Bread of Life Community Secondary School.

The student mothers are now able to go to class while their children are cared for on school site.

We have high expectations for this group of students, and they know it.

Baby Success is now over a year old and spent her first day in childcare today—along with other babies—thanks to the perseverance of her mother who refused to give up. 🙏🏽

Pictured with permission are the strong women in this family:
Agness and her baby Success, her mother, and her grandmother and great grandmother.

Much respect to these strong women who have given Agness their unconditional support and refused to force her into early marriage. ❤️
