From the 9th District folks:

Just wanted to give everyone a heads-up on something we are starting to see more often and something Jared Bonvell mentioned at our District Picnic. There are groups, including realtors and other organizations, hosting veteran benefit seminars and bringing in for-profit companies that offer to help veterans file VA disability claims or increase their ratings.

If you see one of these being promoted in your area, please make sure your Post members understand what they are signing up for. Some of these companies are not VA accredited and can charge veterans thousands of dollars for services they can receive from an accredited VSO for free.

Another concern is that at the end of the day, the veteran is responsible for the information submitted to the VA. If someone tells a veteran to exaggerate a condition, make a statement that isnโ€™t accurate, or submit questionable information, it can be the veteran who has to deal with the consequences later.

Iโ€™m sure many of the realtors, businesses and community groups hosting these events have good intentions and believe they are helping veterans. I just want us to make sure our members know there is another option.

We have accredited VFW Service Officers who will help veterans with their claims at no cost. KDVA and other accredited veterans organizations also provide this service for free.

If you see one of these seminars being advertised in your District, please share this information with your Posts and veterans in the area. I would much rather have a veteran talk to an accredited VSO first and get a second opinion before signing a contract and potentially paying thousands of dollars.

UPDATE on What's happening with Veterans Guardian as of 8/3/2026

A federal judge just ruled that Veterans Guardian VA Claim Consulting broke the law by charging veterans fees to help with VA disability claims, without being accredited by the VA to do that work in the first place. The court found the company kept doing this even after the VA told them to stop, twice (2019 and 2024). Veterans paid Guardian over $250 million in fees during the years covered by this case.

The judge has now said: yes, this was illegal, and yes, Guardian is on the hook. What hasn't been decided yet is exactly how much money Guardian will have to pay back. That part, and one more piece of the case, still has to be worked out, likely in the months ahead.

Bottom line for members: if you're using a claims consultant, check that they're VA accredited.

The Department photographer Robert Bracken will be taking pictures, to be placed on the Department's website. I ask that if you don't own a suit, please at least wear a collared shirt. This is what our members, other Departments, and the public sees when they look at our website. Let's try to show everyone how professional Kentucky is.
