Excerpt: “The situation is being driven by forces well beyond Lake Tahoe's borders. Northern Nevada has become one of the fastest-growing data center corridors in the country, with Google, Apple, and Microsoft all building facilities around the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center east of Reno. Data centers consumed 22% of Nevada's electricity in 2024, and that share could rise to 35% by 2030. A region that powers the AI boom is now squeezing out the people next door.”

Excerpt: “The environmental footprint of data centers already rivals some of the world's largest countries, according to a United Nations University report, which also predicts their water and energy use and pollution will double in just four years as use of artificial intelligence grows.

Last year, global data centers used 448 trillion watt-hours of electricity, more than all but 10 countries of the world, said the report issued Wednesday. That electricity use produced about 208 million tons (189 million metric tons) of carbon dioxide, about the same amount as Argentina, and producing that much energy consumed about 1.2 trillion gallons (4.5 trillion liters) of water, according to the report on the environmental consequences of AI's energy use.”

Excerpt: “Now consider a new pre-press study that found 10 minutes of AI assistance measurably reduced persistence and impaired independent cognitive performance. Across a series of trials with more than 1,200 participants, researchers tested people on math reasoning and reading comprehension. The finding revealed that AI helped in the moment, but when participants returned to working on their own, they performed worse and were more likely to give up. Not after months of dependency. After a single brief interaction.”

Borrowed certainty only feels like understanding.
