Out Loud Louisville Fostering creative expression and self-esteem in all marginalized genders

Out Loud Louisville aims to empower girls, trans, and gender non-conforming youth from all backgrounds by exploring music creation in a supportive, inclusive environment. We view music as a force for change and community building and as an opportunity to learn self-confidence, self-expression, and participation in social justice.

Now that both camps are over, we want to give a very special thanks to some volunteers who we could not have done this without: GEAR HELPERS! These amazing people helped us pack, load, drive, unpack and set up gear (drums, guitar and bass rigs, PAs, cables and more) for both camps, which is no small feat. Especially when the freight elevator is unexpectedly unavailable on the first day of Adult Rock Camp. šŸ˜… We cannot thank them enough. If you'd like to help us with gear, get in touch!

THANK YOU: Dan Zink, Brandon Bass, Jake Reber, Sean Rose, Scott Mottola, Erika Howard and her van, Buddy Shirey, Anne Gauthier, Alix Lay, Corbin Krebs, Allison Cross, Nicholas Layman, Jackie Royce, SteVon Edwards, Laura Quimby, Kate Welsh, Adeline Ward, Steven Ward, Lance Oliphant, John Oliphant and Bernie Bordador. Steven will serve as Treasurer of the Out Loud Louisville board, familiar with the
organization through participation of the oldest of his two daughters in Girls Rock camp (2015). He wanted to get involved because of what OLL’s camps offer to young aspiring artists: open, welcoming community, the opportunity to get comfortable around an instrument and performance and the boost of confidence it inspires. Steven is a record collector, live music regular and architect, having worked on projects like the Baringer Hill pavilion at Cherokee Park, St. Matthews Library, Atherton High School’s recent expansion and the new Fern Creek Library.

Jackie Royce is a local musician who frequently subs as a bassoonist with the Louisville Orchestra, is part of Louisville Academy of Music and a member of experimental band Ut Gret. She has been involved in OLL in various roles in the past, but joins us this year as a board member and coordinator of our Teen/Youth Camp. Oh, and she's attending Adult Rock Camp for the first time!

This is what she had to say about Out Loud Louisville: "My first interaction with Out Loud was in 2019 for what was then called Girls Rock Camp. I was a band coach (Ghost Boy 4 life!!), and I led a workshop on free improvisation. That week of camp was so much fun. This was my first attempt at the improv workshop, and I went on to lead that workshop at the Adult Rock Camp later that year, and then again with other organizations! It was awesome to see the similarities and differences between the youth improvisations and the adult improvisations. Leaning into listening and playing in the 'now' and sharing sonic space to make something beautiful is a concept that plays well in all aspects of life.

I'm grateful for Out Loud, not only for the work it does to make this genre of music education more accessible and inclusive to girls and MAGES (marginalized genders), but also for the opportunities it gives community members to get involved and explore/share their passions with our youth in a safe and supportive space.

I am excited about not only becoming a board member, but in organizing and coordinating this year's youth camp. It's going to be a great week!!"

A local musician playing in Bungalow Betty and The Get Down, Jordan is a current board member of OLL and has been involved in the organization in various ways for the past several years. When asked to share about her experience with OLL, she said, "I can’t say enough great things about Out Loud Louisville and the incredible work they do bringing music education to both youth and adults. It’s clear this organization is built on passion, inclusivity, and a genuine love for music. What sets Out Loud Louisville apart is their hands-on approach. Students don’t just learn notes. They get the full experience, from playing in bands to performing live. The instructors are not only skilled musicians but also supportive mentors who meet students where they are and help them grow in confidence, creativity, and skill. It’s inspiring to see how Out Loud Louisville creates a space where people can find their voice. Adults can reconnect with music or even try something new for the first time. The sense of community they’ve built is encouraging, welcoming, and full of energy."

Hi there! My name is Terra Taylor, I’m twenty-five, and my current position is in Youth Services as a Library Assistant with the Louisville Free Public Library. I received an education in English and Composition at Texas Woman’s University, graduating in 2022. My life and passions have always been centered around literature/writing, visual arts and music. With great luck, I was able to weave these interests into the fabric of my everyday life. It has become my life’s work to share my enthusiasm for public works, especially libraries, as a free and liberating tool available to our communities here in Louisville. Therefore, I am so very excited to be working as a Workshop Leader this summer with OLL to continue to share how libraries rock and roll.

I'm Katie Wilson and I am a teacher in Indiana who loves working with kids and helping them explore the world around them. Music has been an important part of my life since I was young. I started on voice and piano lessons at 8 years old and just picked up bass guitar three years ago. I’m a vocalist in a local band and want to help get the community involved in music as much as possible. It’s a great avenue to connect with others while creating art.
