To the University of Miami Community,

Today I share the news that President Julio Frenk will be leaving the University of Miami to serve as the next Chancellor of the University of California, Los Angeles, one of the world’s great public research universities, starting January 1, 2025.

In his nine years at the U, Julio led us through some of the most consequential moments in our history. He helped guide the University through unprecedented challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and empowered our students, faculty, and staff to achieve excellence in every area—education, research, patient care, and service to society. Our health system has achieved a dramatic turnaround. The U’s ascension to the Association of American Universities last year confirmed our position as one of the premier research universities in the country. We made historic investments to manage through significant—and ongoing—changes in intercollegiate athletics. We have continued to attract the best and brightest minds to partner with our community on pressing challenges from sustainability to cancer.

Julio’s tenure has been marked by resilience, vision, and an innovative management model that allowed us to attain remarkable results for our students, patients, and community. He will begin a sabbatical from the University of Miami starting today to focus on his transition to California as UCLA Chancellor-designate.

As we bid Julio farewell, our commitment to excellence remains unwavering. To that end, I am pleased to announce that following consultation with the leadership of the Faculty Senate, the Board of Trustees has selected Chief Executive Officer Joe Echevarria to serve as Acting President of the University of Miami, effective immediately. Joe has served as Julio’s very capable partner for the past four years—first as CEO of UHealth and for the past two years as CEO of our entire institution. Joe is a proud alumnus and a proven and accomplished leader whose deep commitment to our academic mission has enabled much of our recent success, with clear strategy and focused ex*****on of our education, research, and health care missions. Those of you who have worked with Joe know that his gift for asking the right questions, empowering talented professionals, and insisting on accountability is precisely the steady leadership we need to persist on our journey of continuous improvement.

My fellow Trustees and I are also committed to ensuring an orderly leadership transition in the spirit of shared governance. At this key juncture, we are especially grateful for the constructive partnership we have built with the Faculty Senate. Over the next several months, the Board of Trustees will engage in a thoughtful and robust discussion with faculty and other important stakeholders to initiate the process of identifying the next President of the University of Miami.

As we approach our second century, we are mindful of our responsibility to not only maintain but also advance our leadership in all areas, and to continue the remarkable ascent of a university that has achieved so much in such a short time. On behalf of the entire University of Miami Board of Trustees, please join me in wishing Julio the very best as he prepares to take the helm at UCLA and thanking Joe for his willingness to serve the U again at this crucial moment.

Dear University of Miami community,

Following a national search, we are delighted to announce that Paul A. Pavlou will be the next Dean of the Miami Herbert Business School beginning July 1. A proven leader and accomplished scholar, Dean Pavlou currently serves as Dean of the C.T. Bauer College of Business and Cullen Distinguished Chair and Professor of Decision and Information Sciences at the University of Houston.

During his time at Houston, the Bauer College has seen dramatic improvements in rankings, experienced significant growth, and excelled in both retention and graduation. Dean Pavlou has prioritized experiential learning and job placement for the benefit of both students and industry.

At a time when Miami has become an increasingly important global tech hub, his research interests—which span several disciplines, including information systems, marketing, strategy, operations, and decision sciences—equip him to engage in interdisciplinary efforts across the institution and in our surrounding community.

Beyond Dean Pavlou’s considerable leadership abilities and administrative experience, his scholarly productivity has yielded more than $3.5 million in research grants with emphasis on data science, analytics, artificial intelligence, digital business strategy, and research methods. His research has been cited over 90,000 times by Google Scholar, and he was recognized among the ‘World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds’ by Thomson Reuters.

A Distinguished Fellow of the INFORMS Information Systems Society, Dean Pavlou earned his Ph.D. in Information Systems and Master’s in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering and Managerial Studies Magna Cum Laude from Rice University.

We extend our gratitude to the search committee for its efforts to identify and recruit a candidate equipped to accelerate our drive for excellence. In Miami Herbert Alumna, Vice Dean of Lifelong Learning and Executive Education, and Interim Dean Ann Olazábal we have been fortunate to have a steady hand at the helm during this transition for the Business School.

Please join us in welcoming Dean Pavlou to the University of Miami and thanking Interim Dean Olázabal for her exemplary commitment to the U.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s basketball team (3-0) defeated the FIU Panthers (0-3), 86-80, Monday night at the Watsco Center for their third victory of the season.

The No. 12/11 Hurricanes shot 61.9 percent (13-of-21) from 3-point range, with three different Miami players connecting on three-plus 3-pointers. Juniors Bensley Joseph and Wooga Poplar each knocked down four 3-pointers in the game, while junior Matthew Cleveland went a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.

“I thought both teams tonight showed the willingness to play really hard from start to finish,” head coach Jim Larrañaga said. “There was not let up by either team…With 30 seconds left, it was just a couple possessions [that could] make a difference. I’m very proud of our guys for hanging in there and I was very impressed with FIU.”

Cleveland tied his career high in scoring with 23 points on the night to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. Joseph poured in career-high 18 points, highlighted by a 4-of-5 effort from 3-point range.

Poplar also tallied 18 points in the contest and fourth-year junior Nijel Pack joined him in double-digits with 17 points for his second double-digit game of the season.

Fourth-year junior Norchad Omier led the Hurricanes in rebounding, hauling in 11 boards to keep his season average at 11.0 rebounds per game.

Miami was electric from 3-point range to start the game, connecting on 4-of-5 early shots from beyond the arc to go up 22-11 at the 11:55 mark in the first half. The Hurricanes ultimately shot 7-of-11 from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes, highlighted by a 3-of-4 effort from Joseph.

However, the Panthers clawed their way back into the game, stringing together a 14-3 run in the final four minutes to make it a two-point game, 41-39 in favor of Miami, heading into halftime.

The Panther carried their momentum into the second half, opening the frame with a 14-0 run to retake the lead for the first time since 19:11 in the first half. Cleveland put a stop to the Panthers’ run with a 3-pointer at the 15:46 mark, sparking a 19-0 Miami run to put the Hurricanes back in the lead.

The teams traded baskets in the final five minutes of action, with FIU narrowly outscoring the Hurricanes 12-10, but Miami withstood the Panthers’ pressure and closed out the victory at home.

The Hurricanes hit the road for the first time this season on Friday, traveling to Nassau, Bahamas for the Baha Mar Bahamas Championship. Miami will open the tournament against Georgia at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17. The game will air on CBS Sports Network.
