Addy's Essay:
I was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes when I was 9 years old. But despite this I have never allowed my diagnosis to hold me back from doing activities I am passionate about. I have only grown and learned that this disease does not define me but it is simply a part of who I am. But more importantly, my passions in life truly make me who I am.
I have always been open to new experiences, and since the 4th grade I have tried everything from Math Hoops, 4-H, and even cooking classes. I love to sing, so I participated in Waco Choir. On opening night, despite never having been on stage, I discovered my love for performing! I then realized I wanted to be on stage more so I started trying out for roles in the 5th grade. This led to a greater desire to be in the spotlight, so I began clogging and performed in several festivals. I went to voice lessons learning to collaborate and explore spoken musical styles and finally found my voice.
During that time I began listening intently to the play "Hamilton" and discovered my shared love for acting and history. I volunteered at the Kentucky Historical Society helping create "learning boxes" to help teach elementary students about American history. The archivists let me handle many amazing documents including some written by Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. It was an amazing experience that got me fascinated in our history and culture, and understanding how I play a role in shaping it. It also made me realize musical theater was my way to tell stories and make history.
Something in me knew I could do more with my talents so I joined Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP). Despite our team not winning at state competition, I learned a lot about being part of a team. Together, these experiences helped me understand that perseverance is a defining trait in reaching your goals.
This year I started expanding my horizons, exploring new types of responsibilities and positions. I currently volunteer at a charming assisted-living facility called Morning Pointe. There I help cultivate a comfortable atmosphere for newer residents who are learning to adjust to their new surroundings. I also help plan fun activities and holiday parties.
To expand my skills in creativity thinking, I enrolled in both Plot Twist Book Club and Art Club where I explore new imaginative ideas and designs. Through my ongoing work in STLP and B.R.A.V.E.S. I am collaborating on projects that seek out ways to make my school a better and safer place for students.
Despite some adversities I have faced in my life, my passion for diverse experiences and perseverance have helped me make it through. Life may sometimes seem to be tough, but when I do something, I really love and care about, I know I can do anything! I hope that I can inspire others to know they can as well.
