Dear friends,

The Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Louisville warmly invites you to attend a special exhibition featuring the artwork and reflections of Louisville resident Vishad Samami. This exhibition, hosted by the City of Prospect, brings together artists from a diverse background. Vishad has dedicated these pieces to friends in Iran. Please read the inspiration behind her work below.

I would love to invite you to come see Global Views. My paintings in this exhibition are dedicated to my friends who are among the many Bahá’ís imprisoned in Iran.

Among them is my friend Vafa.

Thirty two years ago, Vafa was a little boy sitting on the shoulders of his mother and father in a prison visitor room, there to visit his grandfather, who had been imprisoned because he refused to recant his faith.

Years later, Vafa was in the same room, only this time visiting his mother. She too was imprisoned because of her beliefs. One of the charges against her was offering free education to children from underprivileged families. She was also my teacher.

And today, Vafa is the one behind those prison walls. His grandfather is no longer there to see him, but his mother, father, younger brother and friends now sit across from him in that same visitor room.

Three generations. One family. The same prison.
My paintings cannot open a prison door, but they can carry a name and a story.

And perhaps this is where our common endeavor begins.
The world we hope to see tomorrow is shaped by what we choose to do together today. Each of us has a part to play in building a world where people can live with dignity, freedom, compassion and unity.

These paintings are my small contribution.
