This weekend, we kicked off the first meeting of the Lucille Leggett Neighborhood Institute cohort at the Historic Parkland Library!

We were proud to welcome folks representing historically Black neighborhoods across Louisville as we gathered to connect, learn, and share ideas for creating positive change in our communities.

The Lucille Leggett Neighborhood Institute is made possible through a partnership between RPOP and Center For Neighborhoods Neighborhoods. We’re excited for this cohort and all that’s ahead!

Russell’s history is rooted in the people, places, and stories that have shaped this community for generations.

This episode of People & Places of Russell features Colby Bentley, Assistant Director of Place at Russell: A Place of Promise. Colby shares his personal connection to Russell, memories of spending time in the neighborhood with his grandfather, and his appreciation for the people, culture, and history that make Russell special.

From Russell’s legacy as the “Harlem of the South” to the historic Walnut Street corridor, Colby reflects on the importance of honoring the past while helping shape a future centered on the voices and vision of Russell residents.

We’re grateful for Colby and all those working to preserve Russell’s legacy and create opportunities for generations to come.

The story of Russell is the story of its people.

Still thinking about our time at the 2026 Kentucky Affordable Housing Conference (KAHC) in Lexington, KY, last week! Our Co-Director, Theresa Zawacki, had a wonderful opportunity to connect with housing professionals from all across the state of Kentucky, learn about opportunities and resources, and bring valuable insights back to our community.

It was great to be joined by fellow Community Land Trusts from Berrytown CLT in Louisville, KY , Smoketown Community Land Trust in Louisville, KY, and Lexington Community Land Trust in Lexington, KY.

Thank you to the Kentucky Housing Corporation for hosting such an informative and engaging conference!

Join us on August 29th for a community conversation and walk focused on brownfields, vacant properties, and the future of the 30th Street Corridor.

We’ll talk about what brownfields are, how vacant and potentially contaminated properties can impact neighborhoods, and the resources available to help residents and property owners understand, address, and transform these sites.

We’ll also walk the corridor together and hear from you: What would you like to see in this area? What would make the corridor more welcoming, vibrant, and useful to the community?

Come learn, ask questions, share your experiences, and help shape the vision for what comes next. Breakfast will be provided.
