What if preventing bullying begins long before bullying ever occurs?
During National Bullying Prevention Month, we’re reminded of the importance of creating school environments where every student feels safe, valued, and connected.
At the Center for Trait-Based Transformation, we believe prevention can go beyond addressing harmful behaviors. It can begin by helping young people recognize their strengths, develop self-awareness, cultivate empathy, and appreciate the unique qualities of others.
When students begin to see the value within themselves, we believe they may become better equipped to recognize that same value in others.
Our hypothesis is that implementing the Trait-Based Model of Prevention can help transform school culture—fostering greater belonging, mutual respect, and connection, and ultimately reducing bullying.
While this specific outcome has not yet been empirically studied within our model, it represents an important direction for future research.
Because perhaps the most powerful way to prevent bullying isn’t simply teaching children what not to do.
It’s helping them discover who they are—and recognize the worth of those around them.
Start with what’s strong.
