From a portable tower set up early this year to a permanent repeater now humming along in the hills, today is a big win for Camp Shenandoah.

This weekend we’ve been stringing wire, climbing towers, turning wrenches, and chasing signal all around Little North Mountain, and it all paid off. What started as an idea to improve safety for camp is now a working radio system that’s keeping Scouters and Staff connected. While we were at it, we added a .io repeater too! We kept things moving, hit our milestones, and even stayed under budget. That doesn’t happen without a whole lot of good people showing up and getting it done.

Phase 2 is already rolling into May as we keep building out coverage around camp. And just over the ridge, we’re setting the stage for Phase 3 in October bringing Amateur Radio to life and giving Scouts a chance to get hands-on with radios, learn the ropes, and hear their voices carry a whole lot farther than they expect with the Radio Scouting program.

From working behind the scenes to boots on the ground, a huge credit goes to the Scouts, Scouters, and Staff of .scouting and the Louisa Radio Scouting Team for making this a success. From nothing to fully functioning repeater system in one weekend is amazing. This one was built the old-fashioned way with teamwork and collaboration.

One milestone down. Plenty more trail ahead. Stay tuned because there is more to come!

Mulch Weekend Recap:

We moved mountains.
By mountains, we mean bags.
So many bags.
We are all covered in mulch at this point.

Huge shoutout to our Scouts who loaded, unloaded, hauled, stacked, delivered, navigated, and somehow still had enough energy to climb on top of the mulch mountain like they had just conquered Everest.

Meanwhile, back at Dispatch HQ, we had spreadsheets, maps, logistics, and controlled chaos.

In all seriousness, this fundraiser helps fund camping trips, summer camp, high adventure, and a lot of the fun stuff these Scouts get to do all year. When you buy mulch from Scouts, you’re not just buying mulch… you’re buying campfires, backpacks, road trips, and memories.

Thank you to everyone who supported us, ordered mulch, donated, drove trucks, pulled trailers, lifted bags, and made this weekend a success. Big shoutout to

Now please excuse us while we all go take ibuprofen.

Exciting news! Troop 3, Troop 1003, and Pack 183 is honored to receive a grant from the Amazon Rappahannock Region Community Fund. This support will allow us to expand our Scout Hut to support the needs of our Scouts and make a real difference in our community. It was wonderful to celebrate alongside other local leaders like .arts.center and at last night’s recognition event. It so energizing to be part of a network of organizations working together across our region. Thank you to and for recognizing the power of local solutions! 🙌 .scouting

Radio Scouting in action at Camp Shenandoah 🏕️

This weekend we deployed our Portable Radio Scouting Tower to support Camp Shenandoah’s radio system for Winter Camp and the upcoming Klondike Derby. It was truly a team effort.

Huge thanks to the Camp Shenandoah staff and program teams who worked alongside us Saturday. Extra appreciation to the staff who played chauffeur for hours on end (especially in that very cold Polaris) and to the Scouters in the medical building office who absolutely owned the role of
🎤 “Can you hear me now?”
📻 “Good!”
every ten minutes… for hours. MVPs. All of you.

We also programmed the repeater frequency into the camp’s existing radios, which made a noticeable improvement in coverage across camp. Same radios, better reach, less yelling. Results varied by radio model, but overall it was a solid upgrade. The real surprise was the performance of the Ailunce HA1G handhelds: a 5-watt radio hitting a 10-watt repeater reached farther around camp than we expected. We were “shocked”… (not literally because our tower is grounded).

📶 Camp coverage went from “huh?” to “stop yelling! It’s so loud.”

This is Radio Scouting at its best. Hands-on skills, real-world application, and meaningful support for camp safety, coordination, and leadership. Practical, useful, and yes… still pretty fun. We’re looking forward to supporting Camp Shenandoah and our council in future efforts!

We unveiled our 2026 theme at our Annual Planning Meeting this past Monday: GROW BEYOND

This year, Troop 1003 is pushing past comfort zones, building real skills, and becoming better leaders on the trail and in ourselves.

Let’s go beyond… and grow beyond.

While everyone else was battling Black Friday crowds, Troop 1003 hit the woods to and honestly, we think we got the better deal.

Our Scouts practiced orienteering (with some impressive compass skills!), reviewed winter boating safety, and sharpened their Leave No Trace mindset… all under blue skies and crisp fall air.

And yes, the legendary Scoutmaster’s Magic Coffee Pot was on duty, keeping the adults powered up like a well-oiled camp stove.

Adventure beats checkout lines every time.

Our Scouts and Scouters, operating under callsign W1S, received an award from the World Scout Bureau in Luxembourg for our contact during 2025. Always a pleasure connecting with the World Scout Bureau and other Radio Scouting stations each year.
