Sometimes the best part of what we do is simply showing up and telling the story.
Kimberly Mendez, Lead Lifestyle Coordinator at The Spinney at Van D**e invited us to speak with their community about the Wicklund Warriors. We were honored to be there—although I have to admit, Mary managed to distract me just enough that I took the scenic route around what felt like the entire Capital Region before finally arriving... only five minutes late. We'll call that a win.
I had the opportunity to share my leukemia journey, how the Wicklund Warriors came to be, and why our mission remains so important today. Every day, we meet families facing blood cancer who are trying to balance treatment, work, childcare, bills, and everything else life throws at them. That's why we do this.
Kim shared that each month their community selects a charity to support, and we were incredibly grateful that the Wicklund Warriors were chosen as the beneficiary of proceeds from their 2nd Annual SpinneyLife Car Show & Craft Fair.
My in-laws, Roy and Mary, represented us at the event. Roy even brought his vintage BMW, spent the day talking with attendees, and somehow managed to come home with a trophy. Not bad for a guy who was supposed to be there promoting the charity.
The event raised $350 for the Wicklund Warriors, made even more meaningful by the woman who won the 50/50 raffle and generously donated her winnings right back to our cause.
And perhaps the best news of all? I think we made a few new friends. The Spinney community is already talking about forming a team for the Bad Blood Run while Mary is picking out her retirement home.
That's how this work grows—not through big moments, but through conversations, connections, and people who decide they want to be part of something bigger than themselves.
Thank you, Kim, Roy, Mary, everyone at The Spinney, and every person who continues to help us prove that no one fights alone. ❤️💙
