Did you know that engineering isn’t just about launching satellites, building bridges or designing computers? Engineering also helps create things like movies, sound effects and art. This year’s challenge: create a device that transfers stored energy to make sound!

It's an exciting day The Tech Interactive! As a board and search committee member, I'm thrilled to announce that Katrina Stevens will be joining us as our next President and CEO. We looked far and wide for the best candidate to lead us into the next chapter of the Tech's history. Katrina is dedicated to the kids and families who sit at the heart of our mission and to helping young people harness technology to make the world a better place. We are thrilled to have her join the team!

Meet our next president and CEO, Katrina Stevens! She will soon join us from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, where she’s the director of learning science. Before that, Stevens helped lead educational technology efforts as a deputy director in the Obama administration’s Department of Education.

As the first educator and the first woman to lead The Tech, Stevens is deeply committed to equity. We look forward to her leadership inspiring problem-solvers here and around the world.

“The spark that ignites a young person’s passion often happens in informal learning spaces like The Tech Interactive. I’ve always cared deeply about bringing that joy into more structured education. I look forward to building on the connections and progress The Tech has made with local schools to make sure every child has the skills and ability to build a successful future, whether in STEM or another field.” — Katrina Stevens, new president and CEO of The Tech

The Scott Center for Social Entrepreneurship is offering a new summer Civics Institute! This week-long, in-person intensive course (August 3-7) will feature team-based mock simulations around social movements, presidential campaigns, congressional sessions, and a court trial, and students will apply skills to real-life political action. Students interested in justice and politics will examine racism, violence, and other social issues, as well as political and social changemakers such as Martin Luther King, Justice Earl Warren, Senator Cory Booker, and Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors. Sign up, learn more, and view other summer programs at scottcenterse.org/summer.

We're adding a new camp to our line-up of summer programs, and it's one that we're super excited about: the Scott Center Civic Institute. And...it's scheduled to take place IN-PERSON! You can read the description of the Civic Institute below. This program is designed for rising 6th-8th graders and will run from August 3 to August 7, 2020. As always, you can sign up, learn more, and view our other programs at scottcenterse.org/summer. We hope to see you there!

Love politics? Love justice? How do politics further justice? This is
a one week intensive to develop hands-on mastery on the rules and strategies of how to use government to make social change. This is a team-based simulation that will place you on a simulated mock: social movement, presidential campaign, court trial, and congressional session. By the end of the week, you’ll apply your skills in real-life political action. Each day will examine the life and work of one political changemaker. We’ll examine Dr. Martin Luther King, Senator Robert Kennedy, Justice Earl Warren, Senator Cory Booker, and co-founder of Black Lives Matter, Patrisse Cullors. No prior civic knowledge is required but students will be examining real-life issues like racism and violence that require maturity.

This camp will be run by Christopher Chiang and Matthew Callahan and Annie Makela!
