Attendees from across the globe are beginning to gather as we prepare for tomorrow’s gala — an evening dedicated to honoring the luminous legacy of Diana and Lucille Apcar. This moment of distinction calls for both celebration and reflection — upon a lineage that spans centuries and a spirit that continues to inspire generations.
Lucille Apcar, granddaughter of Diana Apcar, the first female diplomat, carried forward her grandmother’s torch with quiet strength and unwavering pride. Through her words and deeds, she ensured that the legacy of her family — rich with courage, compassion, and vision — would never fade, but burn ever brighter.
In her memoir, Shibaraku: Memories of Japan, 1926–1946, Lucille painted vivid portraits of an extraordinary childhood shaped by heritage and history. Descended from a noble Armenian lineage, her ancestors helmed the renowned Apcar Line, a steamship company that traversed the waters of the Indian Ocean and South China Sea, anchoring finally at the Port of Kobe, Japan.
Her grandparents’ journey began in Rangoon, Burma, in 1889 — a union that would chart a course through continents and cultures. From Burma to Kobe, and then to Yokohama, they built A. M. Apcar & Co., an import-export enterprise that would stand as a testament to resilience and enterprise. When tragedy struck early, Diana Apcar, widowed and steadfast, raised her family and managed the business with wisdom and resolve.
During the dark years of the early 1900s, when the Armenian people faced unspeakable persecution, Diana’s home became a refuge. She opened her doors — and her heart — to those fleeing the Ottoman Empire’s violence, even purchasing homes to help them rebuild their lives. More than a diplomat, she was a visionary — a humanitarian, writer, and advocate whose courage transcended her time.
It is through this indomitable spirit that her granddaughter, Lucille, inherited the strength to lead, to create, and to remember. Together, their lives illuminate a legacy of integrity, courage, leadership, and compassion — a legacy that continues to guide us, reminding us that from the steadfast roots of ancestry, the light of inspiration never fades.
