THE RISE — WNBA 2024: The Year That Changed Everything screens Tuesday at the Landmark Sunset, part of the Outfest Cinema Series presented by Octagon.

Director Taj Paxton's documentary goes inside the season that rewrote the ratings, filled the arenas, and got the rest of the country to catch up to what this audience already knew.

The Warmth of an Empty Teacup

OutfestNEXT is around the corner — four nights of q***r cinema, July 23–26, at the LA LGBT Center's Village at Ed Gould Plaza.

We're spotlighting a few films from the program that you will want to discover. The films a room like OutfestNEXT exists to put in front of you:

• Madfabulous — a lush period piece starring Callum Scott Howells, Rupert Everett, and Ruby Stokes.

• Maspalomas — Aitor Arregi & Jose Mari Goenaga's Goya-winning character study of a gay man beginning again at 76.

• Out of the Woods — Outfest alum Sal Bardo's feature debut, starring Frances Fisher, with Bruce Davison and Mimi Kennedy.

• Time Warp — a documentary on a Rock Springs, Wyoming drag troupe staging Rocky Horror against the odds, on Rocky Horror's 50th anniversary.

• Dreamboi — Rodina Singh's genre-blending debut and a major new voice in international trans cinema, in our Microcinema.

• Jaripeo— A q***r rodeo, shot on Super 8. You will not see anything else like it this year.

• Barbara Forever — Brydie O'Connor's Teddy Award–winning portrait of pioneering le***an filmmaker Barbara Hammer, executive produced by Christine Vachon and Kristen Stewart. Over the years, Outfest has shared many of Hammer's films with audiences in LA; this is her legacy coming home.

• The Brittney Griner Story — Alexandria Stapleton's documentary on survival and solidarity, with a Black q***r love story for the ages at its center.

• Ephemera — Shan Jiang's Tribeca-premiering Shanghai romance, a sapphic reimagining of Linklater's Before trilogy.

• Sparks — Fergus Campbell's mash-up of French New Wave and New Q***r Cinema, one of the most assured first features in the lineup, starring Elsie Fisher.

• Black Burns Fast — Sandulela Asanda's candy-colored South African coming-of-age, playing our Microcinema.

• Something You Should Know About Me— Trans masc rom-com laughs, no notes. Executive produced by Lilly Wachowski and directed by newcomer Andy Fidoten, and exactly the kind of film OutfestNEXT exists to put in front of a full room.

HOW TO FEST: Your complete guide to OutfestNEXT, July 23–26

Four nights of q***r cinema at the Los Angeles LGBT Center's Village at Ed Gould Plaza—here's everything you need to know before you go.

Where: 1125 N McCadden Place, Los Angeles. Enter through the gates on McCadden to reach the courtyard and the Renberg Theatre.

Getting there: Metro bus lines 4 and 224 stop at Santa Monica/Highland and Santa Monica/Las Palmas. Limited underground parking is available directly across the street at the Anita May Rosenstein Campus (1118 N McCadden Pl)—we recommend transit or rideshare, and leaving extra time either way.

Tickets: Renberg screenings are $20, Microcinema screenings $12, and workshops and talks are pay-what-you-can. Buy online anytime at outfest.org/next, or at the venue box office, which opens one hour before each screening (credit card only).

Outfest members receive complimentary tickets and 10% off additional purchases, applied automatically at checkout.

On the day: Your ticket is the QR code in your confirmation email—no printing needed. Please arrive 30 minutes before your screening; seats not filled 15 minutes before showtime may be released to the standby line. Seating is open, so early arrival gets you the spot you want.

Sold out? Don't give up. A standby line forms about an hour before each sold-out screening—one ticket per person, released on a space-available basis starting 15 minutes before showtime.

Can't make it after all? Tickets can be transferred to a friend through your Eventive account: My Tickets → Manage → Transfer.

Accessibility: All venues are wheelchair accessible. Early access is available for patrons with accessibility or mobility needs—just ask a theater manager. Service animals are welcome, and all-gender restrooms are located in the Renberg lobby.

And Thursday and Friday, the courtyard opens at 5pm, 11am on the weekend—bar, music, and the conversation after the credits. Come early, stay late.
