Survey data from PIQE, a Dual Language Learner Master Plan Advocates partner, highlights the gap between family interest in dual language programs and their awareness these programs exist. Listening sessions across the state reveal the same thing: families want an education system that respects and uplifts home language and culture, but they don’t know how to access education programs. This is especially true for our youngest dual language learners. More school-family engagement is needed to truly meet community needs.

The second installment of the four-part blog series digs deeper into research and shines a light on family interest in strong dual language programs that empower children to thrive in two or more languages.

Last month for National Bilingual/Multilingual Learner (ML) Advocacy Month, Early Edge California’s Director of Policy, Carolyne Crolotte, reflected on the many critical advancements Early Edge has made in support of our young children over the recent years. 🎉

“As a multilingual learner myself, having grown up speaking Brazilian, Portuguese, and French at home and learning English in public schools, I am deeply honored and grateful to have played a role in all of these important contributions to the field. Early Edge is committed to continuing these efforts and many more to ensure that all multilingual learners in California have access to the programs and resources they need to succeed and thrive.”

Recently, Early Edge California Policy Analyst Andrew Avila provided public comment at the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, thanking the Senate's leadership for their plan to fund the promised 44,000 spaces, for addressing the 80/20 rule for family child care home providers, the need to align cost-of-living-adjustments among all Early Learning and Care ( ) programs, and moving forward with the alternative methodology for true cost of care rate reform. We hope to see a final budget that also includes an increase to provider pay!

Is there before- and after-school care for students? Many school districts offer extended care and learning options, either on-site or nearby. 🏫

Availability and offerings vary by district, so it’s best to ask your school site or district about the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P), the After School Education and Safety Program (ASES), and programs offered by community-based partners.
