HAPPY PRIDE MONTH🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

“Justicia para Sniker” is a film originally created as part of Justice for My Sister’s 16 Days of Activism in 2014. Check out the full version on Youtube as we celebrate Pride Month.

Sniker is a young trans man. He became part of the trans feminist movement in Quito, even though in his coastal community in Ecuador, being trans was unheard of. He says,  “While they want to get married, we trans people—trans women and trans men—die every day.”

Happy Asian American and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month!

A large part of sharing our stories is appreciating those who paved the way, those who fought for our rights, those who spoke in the face of tyranny, and those who sacrificed their livelihood for the greater good. As children of immigrants and underrepresented communities, we are more powerful when we take up space in spite of the systems designed to exclude us.

Let us honor these courageous womxn who changed history and to our AAPI community at large who continue to persevere: we see you, we stand with you, and we celebrate you!

Thank you to for your contributions to this post.

Desiree Marisol Carcamo () is an alumni of our Production Assistant Certification Program and she produced our Short Film LaunchPad film, MoleGuan.

“Working on MoleGuan with JFMS pushed and expanded my capacity. As always, I am very grateful to JFMS and Kimberly for the way that they have championed my career and given me hands-on set experience and trust, especially in larger capacities like one. Hands-on experience is hard to come by and so essential for up and coming filmmakers.”

Previously, Desiree was hired as a producer for JFMS’ Music Video Launchpad as well as a director and co-writer for our Teen Dating and Healthy Relationships PSA video series.

We are so proud of all of the alumni that were able to staff as a part of our crew and we are grateful to our partners and who made it all possible. To keep up with updates on MoleGuan as we enter post-production, sign up for our newsletter using the link in our bio!

🎬🍿PART 2:

This year, Justice for My Sister is celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month by uplifting AAPI filmmakers and films.

We hope that stories like these will inspire you to share yours and we encourage all aspiring filmmakers of color to take space by honoring your ancestors through trauma-informed storytelling. Representation matters now more than ever! If you’ve been looking for a sign to pick up a camera, write that script, or just fill up your cup, now’s the time.

Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! 🎉

“The girl found motivation, she started setting goals, and she became her own inspiration.”

In 2019, Justice for My Sister partnered with PBS SoCal and To Foster Change for our Video Diaries workshop. Roshawn’s video diary takes us through her life via the tattoos on her body, courageously sharing her journey in foster care, living through homelessness, and the loss of her birth mother and making it out on the other side stronger and more in tune with herself and her spirituality. Stories like Roshawn’s highlight how self love and self discovery can manifest in ways that you never expected.

We take this moment during Mental Health Awareness Month to reflect on how stories have the power to heal. We hope that you too can be kind to yourselves and find inner-healing despite the obstacles you may face along the way.
