New article by on the Evict Ice, Not Us coalition’s months-long struggle to win protections for tenants amidst ICE’s siege of Los Angeles.

Even though the LA County Board of Supervisors declared a state of emergency last Fall, all but Lindsey Horvath have refused to stand up for all tenants in the county and have sided with the landlord lobby, putting millions of tenants at risk of displacement, detention and deportation.

The supervisors’ cowardice illustrates our need to keep fighting together as tenants — to build power in our neighborhoods, to defend our neighbors, and to determine the future of a Los Angeles for the people. The fight continues!

From the Ktown Local - The Virgil Square Tenants Association is on month NINE of its RUBS strike. RUBS (Ratio Utility Billing System) charges add hundreds of dollars to tenants’ rent each month with no transparency. Tenants at Virgil Square aren’t paying their utility bills until they get answers. Their landlord, Equity Residential, refuses to let tenants see the underlying bills (even though they are required to by law!)
Landlords systematically use RUBS to mislead tenants about the price they will be paying, to get around rent control, and to charge tenants for things that are the landlord’s responsibility. They get away with it because the city doesn’t regulate RUBS at all and most tenants don’t fight back.
LA City Council will soon be considering prohibiting the use of RUBS in buildings across LA. Fill out our petition at banrubs.org to get updates, and DM us or if you’re a tenant in LA who has RUBS and you’re interested in organizing your building!

RUBS—Ratio Utility Billing Systems—is a corporate landlord scam designed to force tenants to pay for building-wide utility bills we can't control. BAN RUBS RUBS hides rent hikes in your utility bill — functioning as one of the most widespread hidden utility junk fees in rental housing. YES, LE...

This week the LA County Board of Supervisors yet again abdicated their responsibility to protect immigrant tenants. By refusing to second Supervisor Horvath’s motion to increase the rent debt threshold for eviction, 4 out of 5 supervisors demonstrated that they don’t have what it takes to protect Angelenos from Trump’s fascist occupation of LA.

A board of supervisors that is more concerned with defending itself against lawsuits, and policing its constituents than protecting them has no business representing the people of Los Angeles.

While our elected officials continue to collaborate with Trump’s plan for Los Angeles, LATU will continue organizing to defend our community.

*

WE DEMAND EVICTION PROTECTION FOR ALL OF LA COUNTY!

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10th, COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS - 9AM, 500 W Temple St

GIVE PUBLIC COMMENT: bit.ly/evictice88cities

After months of pressure the LA County Board of Supervisors will vote whether to triple the amount of rent debt landlords can use to evict tenants in all of Los Angeles County. This would give tenants facing the economic crisis of ICE’s occupation time to avoid court and get organized.

After months of pressure, the supervisors voted last week to raise this threshold, but only in *unincorporated* LA — meanwhile 93% of raids have happened in incorporated LA city! We need protections in ALL of LA County now!

EVICT ICE, NOT US!

¡EXIGIMOS PROTECCIÓN CONTRA DESALOJOS PARA TODO EL CONDADO DE LOS ÁNGELES!

MARTES, 10 DE FEBRERO, JUNTA DE SUPERVISORES DEL CONDADO - 9:00 a. m., 500 W Temple St.

¡DESALOJEN A ICE, NO A NOSOTROS!

From Echo Park Local - Last February, the immigrant families living at Robinson & Ellsworth in Silverlake received 120-day notices to vacate their homes of 35 years or face an Ellis Act eviction. A year later, they are still here, organizing with across the city to fight the predatory “Ellis Act,” and preparing to defend their homes in court in the coming months.

These Salvadoran elders have seen their loved ones leave the vibrant working-class neighborhood one by one, priced out and forced out by gentrification. Now, the landlord, Aaron Jacobson, who recently purchased their homes wants to remove the building from the rental market and remodel the units in time for the Olympics.

Stay tuned for updates on how you can support their fight and keep long-time families in Silverlake FOREVER ❤️‍🔥

On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors passed stronger eviction protections for unincorporated LA County, where only a fraction of the county’s population lives and despite knowing that 93% of ICE raids have happened in incorporated municipalities. Tenants in Los Angeles and 87 other cities need protection too!

In response to our pressure, Supervisor Lindsey Horvath introduced a stronger motion that would extend protections to the whole county, providing coverage to millions more tenants. Join us at 500 W Temple on Tuesday, February 10th when the Board will vote.

Both of these motions provide protections for tenants behind on rent by raising the minimum they have to owe before a landlord can evict them. Right now in LA City, landlords aren’t supposed to be able to evict you until you owe more than one month’s fair market rent (~$2080-$3600, depending on the number of bedrooms). Now, that amount has been doubled for unincorporated LA, and may triple next Tuesday for the entire county if the motion passes with 3 votes.

Only 10% of tenants in LA County live in unincorporated areas. ICE has attacked the City of Los Angeles, Sante Fe Springs, Glendale, Inglewood, Monrovia, Pico Rivera, Culver City… We need protections for the entire county!
