Hollywood belongs to tenants! In the heat of summer, the Hollywood Local of the L.A. Tenants Union organized an outreach stroll around central Hollywood. Anchoring the outreach effort was Hollywood’s first “Really Really Free Market,” offering free food, haircuts, harm reduction supplies, bike tune-ups, books, clothes, and more.

The stroll along Franklin Ave included visits to four sites where the Hollywood Local has accompanied tenants in organizing with neighbors. We heard testimonies from Local members living in the transitional housing facility at the Highland Gardens Hotel. We were greeted by residents of the senior supported housing building at the Montecito II. We met tenants of the hundred-year old Chateau des Fleurs Apartments. And we heard testimonies from members of the tenant association on Grace Avenue.

The stroll continued on its way through the neighborhood passing out information and meeting neighbors along the way. With our voices ringing down the streets, the message was clear; tenants in Hollywood are here to stay!! We won’t be intimidated by landlords, developers, or ICE!

Our march through Hollywood ended where it began at the Dorothy J. & Benjamin Smith Park on Franklin Ave where volunteers had set up canopies and tables for the “Really Really Free Market” complete with music by Jack Kovacs. Like the march, the market proved an excellent way to meet neighbors, introduce people to the L.A. Tenants Union, and spread the word that for nearly ten years the Hollywood Local has been organizing tenants, housed and unhoused, block by block.

Come out to the next community meeting of the Hollywood Local on Monday, August 10 at 7pm at Blessed Sacrament Church at 6641 Sunset Blvd, Room 108, Hollywood, CA 90028. LATU builds tenant power! ¡Solo el pueblo salva al pueblo!

"Virgil Square tenants, however, are advocating for an outright ban on RUBS [ratio utility billing systems], one that would apply to all residential buildings, regardless of whether they’re rent-stabilized.

"'Our argument is if you’re banning it in [Rent Stabilized] buildings, that’s basically you admitting there’s something wrong with this, but you’re just kind of doing the baseline,' Virgil Square tenant Joe Porter said. 'You’re not thinking about the bigger picture or tenants in general.'

"LA Housing Department spokesperson Sharon Sandow said state law prohibits cities from regulating rent increases on non-rent stabilized units.

"[Ethan Silverstein, managing attorney with the California Center for Movement Legal Services], in his memo, however, says this prohibition doesn’t apply to RUBS. 'It is well within the Authority of Los Angeles to outright ban any new RUBS agreements, whether or not the tenancy is covered by the RSO,' he wrote. He told LA Public Press that he doesn’t know of any other cities that have banned RUBS on non-rent-stabilized units, but that they also have the right to do so."

A city department recommends a ban for rent-stabilized units, but some tenants want one citywide.

From Echo Park Local - On Friday, dozens of members across our union joined us in court in support of Julio and Agnes and the Occidental Tenants Association who are beloved leaders of our local. We go to eviction court as a union to for many reasons. Among them is to bear witness to the crimes against humanity that judges, landlords and attorneys commit against the people of Los Angeles every day. Where evictions are seen as an individual or administrative issues in court - we bring in the masses and recognize it as a collective political issue. So many people go un represented to eviction court with no attorney or tenant union, single mothers, grandmothers. We come prepared ready to put up a fight in and outside of court! Join us this summer for court support for the tenants of our local resisting Ellis Act Evictions!

these Ellis Act Evictions are happening on your watch! How much is enough?!

From Lincoln Heights Local - WE WON! 🎉 Congratulations to Lincoln Heights member Epifania for winning her 2nd Ellis Act eviction case in court today! Epifania, 86 years old, who has lived in her home for 50 years, received her first eviction notice in 2022 after her home was purchased by a Las Vegas based house flipper, Jim Bandy. She has fought and won 6 eviction cases! 😡Through her organizing with the union, the Comite Anti-Ellis and public support, she won that case and the multiple other eviction cases filed after that. Today, the court once again ruled in our favor and determined this Ellis act eviction unlawful! We will continue our pressure on to stop these repeat evictions against elders in our neighborhoods. La union hace la fuerza! When we fight! WE WIN! 📣❤️‍🔥

From the Ktown Local - Join us on Saturday, July 18, 2-4 PM at the space on 8th St. for an exhibition and fundraising event in solidarity with the people of Venezuela. We will be collecting money to support Union Comunera and La Minka, both active comunas (organized communes) and friends of LATU who are currently responding to the damage caused by the back-to-back devastating earthquakes on June 24th

Artist Rome Arrieche’s exhibition, “Chamba,” is a series of photos that document the everyday labor of Venezuelan people. First presented locally in Boyle Heights earlier this year by LATU’s Eastside local , we return to Arrieche’s work in the aftermath of the earthquakes. The artist will join us live via Zoom from Venezuela to report on the current situation and how the comunas are responding on the ground. As well, speakers from Union de Vecinos will share about their experiences of a recent visit to Venezuela prior to this current emergency, where they have connected the work of the comunas with the neighborhood organizing happening in Los Angeles.

la presentación será en español e inglés.
presentaciones will be in Spanish and English.

From Northeast Local, Los Angeles Tenants Union - CONSEGUIMOS UNA REUNIÓN CON EL DUEÑO.

THE "PHONE ZAP" HAS BROUGHT US TO THE NEGOTIATING TABLE WITH THE LANDLORD. Just two days after Silvia’s phone campaign began, the landlord’s team contacted the union to find a solution. Thank you to everyone who took action to support this campaign. Today, we are pausing the campaign while we facilitate negotiations between Silvia and her landlord. We will meet internally with Silvia to ensure that her wishes and needs remain the focus of these negotiations. This campaign has proceeded without the backing of the law or politicians. In fact, several politicians have already complicated this campaign more than necessary. Politicians want to weaken our movement and divert the community's energy toward their own agendas. OUR MOVEMENT FOCUSES ON THE NEEDS OF TENANTS. We can only achieve our goals if ordinary people organize collectively against landlords. It has worked before, it is working now, and it will work again! SOLO EL PUEBLO SALVA AL PUEBLO
