Community, Serve Us is proud to partner with Virtual Internships to support the next generation of talent — connecting students with hands-on opportunities to solve real-world humanitarian challenges.

Meet our first intern, Areeba Fatima.

Major: Master’s in AI and Robotics "with a strong interest in how AI can be applied to real-world challenges"

Location: United Kingdom

Internship Projects: Data Aggregator and Automated Data Analytics and Insights Tool

What excites you about Community, Serve Us: "I’m looking forward to building tools that transform scattered information into clear, actionable insights, particularly through developing an AI-driven data aggregation system and exploring how data can be used to surface meaningful patterns and trends. I’m especially interested in how access to reliable, well-structured information can help communities better understand complex humanitarian challenges such as climate-related issues and social inequalities, and move from awareness toward more informed, collaborative action. I’m keen to develop practical skills while contributing to work that has a broader, real-world impact."

Watch Now! New Episode on Community, Serve Us - Fighting Fire With Fire: Cultural & Prescribed Burns
https://communityserve.us/

What if preventing wildfires starts with rethinking everything we believe about fire?

Margo Robbins, Executive Director of Cultural Fire Management Council shares the ancient Indigenous practice of cultural and prescribed burns and how they can prevent wildfires, restore ecosystems, and heal communities.

💡 The goal isn’t agreement. It’s idea generation.

🌱 Take It Further: Help Change the Narrative

We’re building a collaborative Ideas Board to rethink how we approach challenges like wildfire prevention, disaster recovery, and climate resilience.

👉 Visit the Community, Serve Us Ideas Board: https://communityserve.us/adult-community/the-kinnective-ideas/
👉 Add your idea: How can we change the narrative around fire, prevention, and community resilience?

Your idea can be:

- A policy shift
- A community initiative
- A storytelling or media concept
- A technology or data solution
- Or something no one has thought of yet

This is where conversation turns into action.

🌍 Why This Conversation Matters Right Now

More than a year after the LA wildfires:

- Over 70% of survivors are still not home
- Nearly half have depleted their savings
- Over 40% have taken on debt just to survive

And zooming out:

- The U.S. has experienced 426 billion-dollar disasters since 1980
- The gap between major disasters has shrunk from 82 days to just 18 days

We’re not just reacting to disasters anymore.
We’re living in a loop of them.

Is our perception of fire hindering essential wildfire prevention strategies?

For decades, public messaging, spearheaded by figures like Smokey the Bear and amplified by media coverage of destructive wildfires, has instilled a deep-seated fear of fire. This has led to widespread apprehension focusing on concerns like animals fleeing the area and potential respiratory issues, often overshadowing fire's natural and beneficial roles, especially for those who have experienced the destruction of fire.

However, a critical understanding for professionals in land management, ecology, and public safety is that fire, when managed, is a powerful preventative tool. Prescribed burns and cultural burns play a vital role in wildfire prevention.

Margo Robbins, Executive Director of Cultural Fire Management Council explains that a significant contributor to today's intense wildfires is the lack of natural fire cycles over the past century. This absence has led to substantial fuel buildup in ecosystems. By implementing controlled burns, we effectively reduce this fuel, thereby mitigating the risk and severity of uncontrollable wildfires.

Embracing and advocating for these responsible, managed fire practices is crucial for building more resilient landscapes and ensuring community safety.

Wildfire preparedness isn’t just about being ready.
Sometimes, it’s about making impossible choices.

And no one prepares you for the guilt.
The guilt of leaving.
The guilt of staying.
The guilt of not being able to help everyone.

This is what real emergencies feel like.

They lost homes.
They lost studios.
Some lost decades of work.

And still, they continue to create.

“Post-Fire 1” is an exhibition featuring 22 artists from Altadena who rebuilt their practice after the Eaton Fire.

Many of the works were created after the fire, while artists were grieving, rebuilding their lives, and navigating systemic barriers.

Some pieces incorporate ashes and debris from the fire.
Others reimagine artwork that was lost - expressing both trauma and rebirth.

This is what resilience looks like.

19 lives lost. Thousands of homes destroyed.

But one of the hardest questions after the Eaton Fire is this:

Could some of these deaths have been prevented?

Reports suggest evacuation delays in West Altadena. Now, lawsuits and a civil rights investigation are underway.

This isn’t just about what happened. It’s about what failed.

We created a space to talk about it - openly and respectfully.
