🚨 UPDATE: California Faculty Association sponsored bill AB 2551 has passed the Assembly floor and is headed for the Governor’s desk. This bill would require the CSU and UC to report demographic information in their annual Time, Place, and Manner Policy reports and to hold an open forum for students to give feedback on the TPM Policy regarding protests.

Students protest and get felonies, suspensions, and punishment for exercising free speech on college campuses😒 but these same campuses can have military-grade weapons with apparently no accountability 🧐 Nothing says “democracy” quite like criminalizing dissent while normalizing militarization 👎🏿 It’s giving authoritarianism & imperial regime vibes 🤨😷

CalMatters
For many public colleges and universities in California, keeping their campuses safe includes owning military-grade weaponry. According to state law, campus police must make annual reports about their stockpiles public and host well-publicized public forums.

But a CalMatters investigation revealed that some UCs, Cal States and community colleges aren’t being upfront about the military style weapons their police are storing on campus. Of the schools that did publish reports, some campuses listed weapons they’re not authorized to have — like tear gas grenades - and over 25 public colleges reported owning semiautomatic ri**es. Many schools also dropped the ball on reporting requirements and hosting public forums. UC
Berkeley only published their report online after CalMatters asked for it several times.

During this investigation, campuses reported taking steps to be more transparent and downsizing their inventory.
