At first glance, this looks like an old RV parked on a city street.

Look a little closer.

For someone, this is home.

Inside may be a parent trying to keep their family together. A veteran. A senior living on a fixed income. Someone recovering from illness, job loss, addiction, or simply the rising cost of living. Every person has a story, and most never imagined they would find themselves living this way.

Homelessness doesn’t always look like a tent on a sidewalk. Sometimes it looks like an RV parked quietly on the edge of a city that keeps moving while people struggle to keep up.

At Ladder Up Effect, we believe dignity should never be dependent on someone’s housing status. Every outreach reminds us that behind every vehicle, tent, or makeshift shelter is a human being deserving of compassion, respect, and support.

The solution begins when we stop seeing “the homeless” and start seeing our neighbors.

Because no one should be invisible.

Standing beneath some of the tallest buildings in the city, it’s impossible not to notice the contrast.

Downtown Los Angeles is often celebrated for its growth, investment, and development. Yet just a few blocks away, thousands of people continue to live without stable housing, many facing challenges related to mental health, addiction, rising housing costs, job loss, and a lack of accessible support systems.

This isn’t just a homelessness issue. It’s a community issue.

Every tent represents a human being with a story, a struggle, and a life that matters.

Through Ladder Up Effect, I’ve learned that meaningful change doesn’t begin with judgment. It begins with listening, showing up consistently, and recognizing the dignity of every person we encounter.

The solution is bigger than any one organization, but compassion is something all of us can contribute.

At this intersection, two realities exist at once.

Above: endless sky, possibility, opportunity.

Below: a neighborhood carrying the weight of poverty, addiction, mental health struggles, and a housing crisis decades in the making.

Skid Row isn’t just a place on a map. It’s a reflection of the systems that fail people and the resilience of those who continue moving forward anyway.

Every person crossing these streets is carrying a story we cannot see.

Before judgment, choose curiosity.
