Rakeb is 10 years old.
She lives in Addis Ababa with her younger brother, Yabsira, and their mother.
Their home may be temporary.
Their future doesn’t have to be.
When Rakeb talks about what she wants to become, her answer is simple:
“I want to become a pilot so I can see the world.”

It can mean having enough to eat.
It can mean knowing that someone, somewhere, believes their future matters.

A new year means new beginnings.

And for one 10-year-old girl named Rakeb, one dream remains bigger than all the others:

A classroom should be a place for books, dreams, friendships and possibilities.
Today, on the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, we stand with children everywhere whose education has been disrupted by conflict, instability and hardship.
For children like Rakeb and Yabsira, education means more than another day at school.
It means another step toward a different future.
