I’ve spent most of my career working alongside some of the best journalists, publicists, radio programmers, photographers, videographers, and media creators who are the reason people discover music. And there are some AMAZING outlets and people doing incredible work right now, carrying a lot of the weight for this industry.
But on the other side of that reality, a lot of music media professionals and outlets are struggling. Newsrooms are shrinking, stations are consolidating, many outlets can’t pay the bills, and freelance rates are a joke.
More content is competing for attention than ever before, and the phrase I hear most often from artists, managers, publicists, and creators when we talk about discovery is: “There just aren’t enough opportunities.” And they’re right.
Music media and arts and culture media at large are often treated as an afterthought these days. But without music media, how do fans discover their next favorite artist? How do emerging artists break through? How do local venues put asses in seats seven nights a week?
This isn’t just a media problem. It’s an artist problem, a fan problem, a venue problem, and ultimately a local economy problem. And if we continue down this path, what does the future look like?
I don’t have all the answers. Honestly, I don’t think anyone truly does... yet. But I do know we need to have the conversation.
And if there’s one place that should be having it, it’s New York City. It’s where scenes are built, artists get their first shot, trends start, and some of the best damn journalists, photographers, broadcasters, and creators in the business have built their careers.
That’s exactly why is hosting this conversation for in partnership with the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment ().
Join us on June 24 as we sit down with some of the best voices in NYC music media to talk about trust, sustainability, discovery, and where we go from here.
And judging by the 100+ people who have already RSVP’d, this is a conversation a lot of people have been waiting to have. It’s free, all are welcome, tune in.
