The book that reframed eternal damnation as moral education was published in Paris on this day in 1865.

Heaven and Hell, or Divine Justice According to Spiritism — the fourth book of the Spiritist Codification — was published by Allan Kardec on August 1, 1865.

Kardec was sixty years old. With Heaven and Hell he took on the inherited theology of eternal punishment and proposed in its place a vision of justice as progress: the soul not condemned to a fixed fate, but learning through successive lives toward greater understanding and love.

It was his second-to-last book. He would die in Paris four years later.

The medium whose séances produced a 7-foot materialized lily took her last breath in Copenhagen on this day in 1919.

Elizabeth d'Esperance (1849–1919), born in London and known to the late-Victorian Spiritualist movement simply as Madame d'Esperance, sat for séances across Britain and Northern Europe for nearly four decades.

Her primary spirit control, Yolande, became one of the most documented materializations of the era — captured in photographs, attested to by scientists, and described in d'Esperance's autobiography Shadow Land. She held her last séance in Copenhagen in May 1919 and died ten weeks later.

How does a 13th-century Catholic saint become one of the most prolific spirit teachers in modern Brazilian Spiritism?

Clare of Assisi (1193–1253) was born on this day in 1193 in Assisi, Italy. A follower of Francis of Assisi from age 18, she founded the Order of Poor Ladies — known today as the Poor Clares — and lived in voluntary poverty and contemplative prayer until her death.

In the Brazilian Spiritist tradition, Clare is recognized as a previous incarnation of the spirit communicator Joanna de Ângelis, whose voice has reached readers through the mediumship of Divaldo Pereira Franco for more than half a century. The library of Joanna's psychographed works — on the human soul, psychology, and spiritual development — is among the most studied bodies of Spiritist literature in print today.

He wrote more books after he died than before. Manoel Philomeno de Miranda discarnated in Salvador on this day in 1942.

Manoel Philomeno de Miranda (1876–1942) — born in Conde, Bahia and discarnated in Salvador — served as President of the Spiritist Federation of the State of Bahia in life, a steady administrative and educational figure in early-20th-century Brazilian Spiritism.

It is the body of work that came afterward, however, that earned him broader recognition. Through the mediumship of Divaldo Franco, Miranda has dictated a series of psychographed novels focused on spiritual obsession and the consequences of harmful mental currents — books that have become foundational reading for Spiritist study groups across Latin America.

Spiritism made its first stop in the South Pacific on this day in 2005.

On July 13, 2005, Divaldo Pereira Franco — born in 1927 in Feira de Santana, Brazil — stood before an Auckland audience and delivered the first public Spiritist talk ever given in New Zealand.

It was the latest stop in a six-decade speaking ministry that has taken Spiritism to dozens of countries on every inhabited continent. Divaldo is one of the most enduring living voices in Brazilian Spiritism, known for the psychographed works of the spirit communicator Joanna de Ângelis and for a tireless international itinerary that continues into his 90s.

Sixteen years old. Forty séances. One full-form materialization that convinced Britain's leading scientist.

Florence Cook (1856–1904) — born in London on this day in 1856 — began holding public séances in her teens. By sixteen she was materializing a fully-formed spirit she called Katie King; by eighteen she had drawn the attention of Sir William Crookes, the future president of the Royal Society.

For four years Crookes investigated her phenomena, publishing his findings in 1874 in a series of articles that endorsed their genuineness — at considerable cost to his standing among scientific peers. Cook's mediumship and the Katie King materializations remain among the most cited cases in the history of Spiritualist physical phenomena.
