It's natural for transportation needs to change as you age. Talk to your loved ones and in the meantime, older drivers can practice safety with:

- Routine eye exams

- Limited nighttime driving, or trips in heavy traffic/bad weather if it feels unsafe

- Minimal distractions from the road

- Staying mentally sharp with brain games and puzzles

- Simple exercises to maintain neck, shoulders, and core (important for blind spots, turns, and reaction time)

Grandparents as caregivers - sometimes referred to as kinship families - are already a vulnerable population that can be expected to act as a "safety net," and a lack of resources can only exacerbate the financial and health stressors.

Older relative (age 55+) caregivers of children can now qualify for LA County's Family Caregiver Support Program. Call 1(800) 510-2020 to be referred to the appropriate agency and receive free education, care coordination, supportive services, and even temporary relief from caregiving.
