Before you join us for this conversation… here’s something to know.
These stories come from Dorothy Roberts’ latest book, The Mixed Marriage Project, based on decades of research started by her father, who began interviewing Black–white couples in Chicago in 1937.
What’s uncovered is powerful.
In*******al couples were resisting discrimination long before civil rights had a name. Many hid their marriages to avoid being fired, evicted, or arrested.
In Northern cities, these relationships weren’t banned by law but were controlled by landlords, employers, neighbors, and even family.
White partners who married Black spouses often lost jobs, housing, and social standing overnight.
And even today, Black–white marriages remain less common than they should be, shaped by the same boundaries that have existed for generations.
This is the history and truth behind The Mixed Marriage Project.
Join us for a powerful conversation with as we unpack these stories and what they mean for us today.
