Ladies, this is your reminder to get your bo***es checked! I do an annual ultrasound, and I highly recommend Advanced Medical Thermography. Drop a breast cancer awareness GIF to encourage others to go get checked. Accountability saves lives!

Your perspective changes your life. In fact, it could save your life.

You probably know that October is breast cancer awareness month.

Here's the thing about being a busy adult... we acknowledge milestones in our lives and others, and we internally say "oh yeah" when we hear things like "it's breast cancer month!" and it starts to lose its meaning.

That's kind of a bummer.

HOWEVER, the beautiful thing about mindfulness is you learn to pause, drop in, and appreciate AGAIN what you're experiencing in the moment.

I encourage you to dive into episode 2 of The Brilliance Method podcast with this exact mindset. It's out right now on Red Coral and everywhere else at midnight EST tonight.

Listen, receive, be open to learning something new, and become an even better friend, advocate, and relative to someone you know who has or has had cancer.

AND if you've ever had to deal with the C-word yourself, I hope this episode will help heal your heart and prepare you for whatever is next.

And may it only be great health, love and joy.

Your perspective changes your life.

Listen for an hour and choose a new perspective.

What if you leave feeling different? You just might.

Let's TELL CANCER TO GO TAKE A HIKE! My next podcast episode is coming out in a couple of days with Laura Carfang who created Surviving Breast Cancer .org. She is doing amazing work and has created a safe place with resources and support for women going through it. I WISH her org existed when I had stage 3 cancer. Please consider donating to my team. The "walk" is on October 19th. Let's raise as much as we can for this great cause and organization. Thank you! And be sure to listen to her interview and our discussion on all things breast cancer (don't worry there will be some laughs in there too) on Tuesday this week!

Thank you Bedford Breast Center for kicking off BC Awareness Month with these awesome tips:

To reduce your risk - be A.W.A.R.E

A - AMUSEMENT - Humor wards off depression and allows us to better adjust to stressful situations. Evidence-based medicine has shown that laughter may help stimulate cancer-killing NK cells. Even something as simple as smiling can boost the immune system and lower blood pressure. It's the only contagious thing we recommend.

W - WORK OUT - The more exercise you do, the more your risk is lowered. Breast cancer risk dropped 10-25% in postmenopausal women exercising a minimum of 2.5 hours per week. Exercise reduces fat, which contributes to inflammatory cycles that can trigger cancer, and also changes hormone metabolism to favor the "good" kind of estrogen breakdown pathways.

A - ANNUAL MAMMOGRAM AND EXAM - If you are over 50, it can be a lifesaver and you should have one once a year. If you are between 40 and 50 or have a strong family history of breast cancer in relatives, talk to your doctor about what the best screening plan is for you. One study out of the Annals of Surgical Oncology in 2011 noted women between 40-49 who had had tumors that were detected on mammography had a smaller chance of having lymph node involvement and overall smaller sized tumors than women who were not undergoing mammography and happened to find their tumors only because that was felt on exam. This is what early detection is all about!

*Elysia Skye also recommends thermography as an alternative to mammograms Advanced Medical Thermography. Thermography may detect cancer SOONER than a mammogram!

R - REST - If you aren't getting enough sleep, the levels of inflammatory cytokines increase and helpful T-cells decrease. Ideally, you should be getting 7-9 hours nightly. Melatonin may have anti-cancer effects and this natural hormone has decreased secretion if sleep patterns are interrupted, especially by light.

E - EATING RIGHT - It would be wonderful if there was a magic list of foods! ... Ones to avoid to keep from getting cancer and ones to eat to guarantee perfect health. Sadly that is not the case, and many reports that label foods "bad" or "good" are confusing. What is universally agreed upon is that diets low in fat and refined sugar are the best for reducing breast cancer risk. Avoiding processed foods and eating clean is a good rule of thumb. If it was around 100 years ago, it's probably ok to eat. Especially if it comes from a plant. Maintaining a healthy weight and reducing alcohol intake can minimize your cancer risk as well. Everything in moderation!

We look forward to a future when breast cancer is prevented from ever occurring. Meanwhile, there here are 5 things you can do to reduce your risk. At Bedford Breast Center we’ve compiled the best tips to help keep you healthy.
