Subject: End Arrests at Protected Labor Actions

Two rights are ironclad in California: the right of organized labor to strike when contract negotiations fail and the right of citizens to speak freely in public. This week, the University of California violated both.

Four UCLA undergraduate students were arrested by university police on Tuesday while picketing in support of AFSCME 3299’s protected strike. Two UCLA graduate student members of UAW 4811 were detained by university police on Wednesday at a union action about contract violations and labor cuts.

We demand the University of California immediately cease and desist from arresting union members and their supporters during actions protected by the First Amendment and California labor law, and that UC leadership ensure none of the six students face criminal charges or student disciplinary proceedings.

Drop all charges - legal and disciplinary.

Signed,

🚨 PACK THE COURT 🚨 Join us this Thursday, 11/6 at 10am for a hearing on AAUP v. Trump. We’re meeting at Philip Burton Federal Courthouse, 450 Golden Gate Ave, SF, 18th Fl, Courtroom 15.

CONTEXT ➡️ Trump officials are demanding $1 billion in extortion money from UCLA, threatening to withhold federal funds from the UC, install federal monitoring of hiring and admissions, and more–all based on false claims of “discrimination.” These demands are blatant, authoritarian attempts to crush academic freedom, silence poltical dissent including anti-genocide, pro-Palestinian speech, push their anti-trans and racist agenda, and control and punish universities that refuse to bow to federal political pressure.

The AAUP, UC Faculty Associations and Labor Unions are asking Judge Lin to grant a preliminary injunction to block this illegal coercion and vacate the Trump administration’s extortionist demand letter. Please come support our case to save the UC and higher education.

This fight is bigger than protecting one university system. It’s about defending our constitutionally-protected rights to academic freedom and free speech, protecting gender-affirming healthcare from political interference, and refusing to accept the weaponization of civil rights law against our trans, Black and brown, and other marginalized community members.

LOGISTICS ➡️ Join us at 10am on Thursday, 11/6, in Judge Lin’s courtroom. Make sure to bring a photo ID and arrive early to get through security.

🚨‼️🚨On June 23, 2025, The Regents’ Workgroup on Faculty Discipline Policies and Procedures sent out an Interim Policy targeting faculty discipline, free speech, and academic freedom. These policies will go into effect Fall 2025.

Some policies will go into effect in Fall 2025 without review, including:

❕When the chancellor issues a notice of proposed discipline, the notice will include a range of proposed sanctions

❕Coordination of discipline with UC Police Departments for all misconduct cases, including those regarding expressive activities

‼️⚠️‼️We must resist this blatant attempt to criminalize and chill faculty free speech!‼️

Some policies will go into effect on an interim basis in Fall 2025 during a 90-day systemwide review, including:

⚠️Faculty may be disciplined for extramural speech when the “university’s interests” outweigh the “employee’s expressive interests”

⚠️Teaching and scholarship will be assessed by reference to professional standards recognized by the Standing Orders of the Regents

✊🏽WHAT CAN YOU DO? Express your concern and outrage over this overreach by the UC Regents by:

Giving public comment at the July Regents Meeting (July 15-17)- mark your calendars now

Giving feedback (and telling your colleagues to do so as well) during the 90-day systemwide review period- the link will be sent out through Academic Senate Committees.
