alth System or other neighboring medical facilities. James Inn programs through hospital social workers whose primary concern is recommending those who are most in need and keeping a family together in a time of crisis. In its home-away-from-home environment, the Inn creates opportunities for outpatients and families to connect with others in similar situations for mutual comfort and understanding. The Inn gives respite from the stress of critical care and provides a haven for healing for all. James Inn is supported by individuals, foundations, and corporations, all of whom share a primary concern for patients and families who find themselves in the most difficult of circumstances. History:
The St. Patrick Traynor, CSP, a UCLA Medical Center chaplain, who observed family members of patients sleeping in the lobby of the hospital or in their cars because they could not afford the cost to stay in a local hotel. Pat dreamed of providing a “home away from home,” for families of critically ill patients who must travel far from their homes for treatment and find the cost of lodging an impossible financial burden. Pat Traynor’s greatest gift was his ability to organize volunteers to implement his visions, to teach others ways to stretch themselves in service to those less fortunate and provide opportunities for doing so. Thanks to his inspiration and unflagging dedication, the St. James Inn has served as a haven for patients and their families of all faiths from all over the world. While concentrating on the core mission of providing no-cost long term lodging to families of patients and outpatients receiving critical care, St. James Inn provides no-cost hotel stays up to four days, food vouchers and Inn hospitality programs which all focus on helping families find respect, compassion and dignity during their times of greatest need.
