As we expand our work and grow our team in Thailand, we’re taking time to learn and celebrate traditions that are meaningful to our community.

With insight from our Thailand Program Coordinator, Mai, we’re sharing more about Songkran—Thailand’s traditional New Year, celebrated April 13–15 and rooted in renewal, reflection, and connection.

What began as a gentle act of pouring water for blessings has grown into a nationwide celebration—bringing together family, culture, and joy.

Whether it’s returning home, visiting temples, or celebrating in the streets, Songkran is really about starting fresh and staying connected.

At the end of January, Jeff Wang, our Taiwan Program Manager, and Benjamin Hemmings, our Operations Director, traveled through Taiwan to follow the journey of recyclable materials through key parts of our supply chain and to deepen relationships with partners across the country.

In Hualien, they spent the day with Mr. and Mrs. Chiu, who guided visits to four informal collectors in our network that participate in our programs and services. It was an opportunity to see firsthand how materials are collected, stored, weighed, and picked up, and to better understand the daily work and relationships that make this system possible. They also visited Jinsan, the Chius’ facility, and Souwei, one of the suppliers they sell materials to.

In addition to Hualien, they also traveled to Taoyuan and Kaohsiung to visit some of our partners and explore opportunities to expand the reach of our work in Taiwan. Across the trip, they visited recycling, yarn, knitting, and dyeing facilities, gaining a deeper understanding of how collected materials move through the supply chain and ultimately become First Mile products.

We are grateful to the collectors, partners, and suppliers who welcomed them and shared their expertise. Their work continues to shape what responsible and transparent supply chains can look like.

We are proud of the products that come from this supply chain - including responsibly sourced plastic, yarn, and finished apparel and accessories. DM us to learn more.

Faces of the First Mile: Meet Aunt Felicia

An aggregator of recyclables and entrepreneur who has been working in the recycling sector for nearly 30 years.

Aunt Felicia began her business as a copper and metals dealer, later expanding into LDPE plastic and PET bottle recycling. Today, she focuses on PET and LDPE, helping keep thousands of plastic bottles out of landfills.

She operates 8 landfill collection sites, with 4 currently active, where more than 200 waste collectors—many from Mali, Togo, and Burkina Faso—moved to Ghana to work in collection under her leadership.

Known for her welcoming spirit and supportive approach, Aunt Felicia has created a place where waste collectors feel respected and supported. Many choose to sell to her because of the positive environment she fosters.

Each month, Aunt Felicia collects around 80 tons of PET bottles—the equivalent of the weight of about 50 cars or 13 elephants—transforming waste into opportunity and helping build a more sustainable future. ♻️

In the photo, she’s holding sacks used to collect even more recyclables—materials we provided to help support and grow her business.

Strong partnerships like this one help move our work forward—locally and globally. Behind each is a team of people choosing to show up, give back, and be part of something bigger than themselves.

, a Braddock-based brewery rooted in community, has been one of those partners for us.

Co-founder Matt Katase first connected with our work while training for the 2020 Run Across Haiti. Even with those miles still ahead, his dedication to the families we serve has remained constant.

Since then, the Brew Gentlemen team has shown up time and time again—riding with us during Move With Us, running the Pittsburgh Marathon, brewing their limited-edition double IPA “200 Miles,” and supporting our annual gala. Together, these efforts have helped raise more than $8,000 for the families we serve.

If you’re nearby, stop by Braddock Public House for a great meal and a house-made beer—and support a team that continues to give back.

Grateful for partners who turn intention into action, again and again. 🍻

As International Women’s Month comes to a close, we’re reflecting on a special day of learning and empowerment. 💜

On March 7, we celebrated International Women’s Day with 43 girls from the Menelas/Truitier community in Haiti.

The day brought together learning, reflection, and joyful connection. The girls participated in thoughtful discussions about women’s rights and violence against women and girls, asking powerful questions and sharing their perspectives.

Through confidence-building activities, yoga, and visualization exercises, they reflected on their strengths and spoke about their dreams for the future. The girls also took part in a session on plastic collection and recycling, learning about the different types of plastic bottles and their role in the recycling supply chain.

We ended the day the best way possible—with singing, dancing, and sharing a meal together. 🎶

It was a meaningful day that left the girls feeling empowered, confident, and inspired.

A huge thank you to our team, community leaders, and the incredible monitors who helped make this event possible. We are so proud of the role they played in creating such a special day.
