Earth Day hits different when you’re on the frontlines.

Because for us, it’s not just about the planet…
it’s about the people living on it.

Every Thursday, we step into spaces most people walk past—
bringing food, resources, and real connection to those who’ve been pushed outside.

Cleaner communities.
Safer streets.
People coming inside and starting over.

That’s what Earth Day looks like at B.A.R.E.

Small actions. Real lives changed.

A lot gets said about homelessness… but this is the part people don’t always see.

Being outside with the —talking to people, listening, and trying to actually move something forward.

That’s how communities change. Not overnight… but step by step.

Yesterday was a reminder that B.A.R.E does a lot more than just get people into housing. Sometimes it’s about helping someone keep the home they already have. We partnered with the local Family Resource Network, Victims Against Domestic Violence, and WV Mt. CAP to help an elderly woman who was at risk of going to jail and losing everything. On paper, it was about the condition of her property. In reality, she had no electricity, no running water, and her home was so full she couldn’t even sit down. She had been sleeping upright in a non-running truck outside.

We spent over five hours cleaning and filled two dumpsters, and we’re still not close to done. But it made a real difference. Because of the progress, she didn’t go to jail. The magistrate placed everything on hold so we can keep working. And that night, she got to sleep back inside her home, in a bed, under her own roof. We’ve got a long way to go, but this is what showing up actually looks like.

This isn’t a simple problem—and there isn’t a simple solution.

People are complex.
Systems are broken.
And the path to stability isn’t the same for everyone.

But one thing is clear:
Leaving people here is not the answer.

Real progress will take collaboration across every level—
service providers, government, community, and beyond.

We may not have all the answers…
but we do have a responsibility to work toward them—together.

This headline doesn’t tell the full story.

As someone doing this work every day, I can tell you—the system isn’t just failing one group… it’s struggling to support everyone involved.

Yes, some people return to the streets.
But let’s be honest about why:
• incarceration
• untreated mental health
• personal decisions
• program rule violations

That doesn’t erase what is working.

Over the last year and a half, our team alone has helped more than 60 people move into permanent housing.

This work is messy. It’s not linear.
But one thing is clear:

Bringing people inside is still better than leaving them on the street.

Now let’s fix what’s broken—especially mental health support—and build systems that actually keep people housed.

From the Streets to a Home: One Man’s Journey Back

This past December, a 57-year-old man walked into a warming center in Webster County with nothing but the clothes on his back. He had been without stable housing for several years, moving from couch to couch, with no clear path forward.
That warming center connected him with B.A.R.E. Truth Inc., and everything began to change.

With the support of our team and Mountaineer Community Action Partnership, he was placed in a motel while the groundwork was laid for something more permanent. Mountaineer Community Action Partnership covered his motel stay and will be paying his rent as he moves forward; but as team member Robin put it, none of this would have happened without B.A.R.E. and that warming center opening the door.

Today, he moved out of that motel and into his very own apartment.

Along the way, our team showed up as more than case managers. They showed up as movers, doing laundry, and making grocery runs — the kind of human support that doesn’t appear on any intake form but makes all the difference.

His next steps include getting connected to disability benefits and building toward long-term stability.

Stories like his are exactly why B.A.R.E. exists, to be the bridge between a person in crisis and a life with a foundation under it.

This Easter, we’re bringing love and community to 90033.

At our Antonio location, we’re preparing a feeding for those who need it most — making sure nobody is overlooked during a time meant for connection.

We’re showing up for this community — and we’d welcome your support and presence this Easter.

To our community — we need you with us.

Here’s how you can help:
• $25 feeds 5 people
• $50 feeds 10 people
• $100 helps us serve even more families

We also need:
• Decorations to brighten the day
• Volunteers ready to give their time

Because Easter isn’t just about celebration… it’s about showing up.

Let’s make sure 90033 feels that this year.

This Easter, we’re showing up in Watts with purpose.

Not just to serve food… but to remind people they’re seen, valued, and not forgotten.

We’re preparing a community feeding in 90059, and we need your help to make it happen.

We’re out here serving your community this Easter — we’d love your support and presence.

To everyone else — this is your moment to step in.

You can help right now:
• $25 feeds 5 people
• $50 feeds 10 people
• $100 helps us feed even more and cover supplies

We also need:
• Decorations to bring joy to the space
• Volunteers ready to serve with heart

Because for some, this meal is more than food… it’s hope.

Let’s show Watts what love really looks like this Easter.

For over 10 years… she survived.
Not lived—survived.

Through the streets.
Through sickness.
Through pain no one should ever have to carry… including domestic violence.

And today… she’s sitting in her own apartment.
A door she can lock.
A space that’s hers.
A moment of peace she’s been denied for far too long.

This is why we do what we do.

I’m proud of my team for not giving up on her… for seeing her, not just her situation.
Because behind every “case” is a human being who deserves dignity, safety, and a real chance at life again.

Today, she’s not just housed…
She’s reclaiming her life. ❤️
