The Good Shepherd Shelter welcomes with love and compassion women and children of every culture, color and creed whose lives have been affected by domestic violence, and offers them a unique environment for long-term emotional, social, educational and spiritual healing and growth.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T 💜

Today at Good Shepherd Shelter, our families and staff came together for a Domestic Violence Awareness Month march. The kids read books about kindness, sang about respect, and made artwork to share their message. Our moms created their own powerful signs, and together we marched as one community.

Some of the phrases we heard today:

"Hands are not for hitting."
"Words are not for hurting."
"Kind hands don't hurt."
"Peace building and no violence."
"I have kind hands." 🤚💜

Research shows that kids exposed to domestic violence often score lower in reading and math than their peers. At GSS, our program gives every child an individualized learning plan, so they can catch up to their grade level and walk into the classroom feeling confident.

Healing happens together. 💜

Today marks the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the numbers here at home are hard to ignore. 💜

In this year's Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count, nearly 5,700 people said domestic violence played a part in their homelessness. That's up 43% from last year. For many survivors, leaving means losing a home too.

At Good Shepherd Shelter, we make sure they don't have to start over alone. Our transitional housing gives women and children safety, stability, and the support they need to heal and build a future free from violence.

Thanks to Ms. Ina, we had the best day celebrating our community helpers! 🚒👩‍🚒

Kiddos read about their chosen helper and wore hats they made, our little ones dressed up in costume, and we played bingo. Then Fire Station No. 26 paid us a visit! Captain Chavez and Captain Wong talked with the kids about safety and let them check out the fire truck and gear up close.

GSS staff and our friends from Calibrate joined the fun too. Every month we host a community reading day to celebrate the kids' progress. Thank you, Fire Station No. 26, for making it so special! 🚒❤️

🎓 Congratulations to our newest graduates! 💐

Through our Adult Learning Program, our mothers participate in classes in financial planning, nutrition, job skills, yoga, and more—building confidence and essential skills to create safe, independent, violence-free lives for themselves and their families.

We loved seeing the pride and joy on our graduates’ faces—and how proud their children are of them. ❤️

Thank you to our dedicated staff, volunteers, and supporters for helping empower these brave women on their journey toward a brighter future.

GSS had another incredible BBQ! ❤️ We enjoyed delicious food, meaningful conversations, and time together with our board members, volunteers, current families, and former survivor families.

Highlights included a prayer led by Monsignor Cox, a powerful personal story shared by Adriana, one of our brave survivors, and a special tour with Deana. A huge thank you to our amazing staff and volunteers for making this special day possible, and to everyone who continues to support our mission to empower women to break the cycle of violence and build independent futures.

Thank you to longtime board member Jenn Saylors and her colleagues at Banc of California for delivering school supplies and donations to Good Shepherd Shelter!

Everything was picked out so thoughtfully and with such care. Our teachers are grateful for the classroom supplies, and the families were thrilled to receive their backpacks, each with a handwritten card from the donors.

Banc of California is being honored with the Corporate Champion Award at our 2026 Gala for their continued support and commitment to Good Shepherd Shelter and the women and families we serve.
