Did you know that less than 10% of girls in South Africa pass 8th grade and continue their education? The main reason to their dismissal is that they can’t afford underwear nor menstrual products and are being bullied in school for it, so they drop out permanently. To prevent girls and women from being in poverty throughout their life, they need an education. We have created a system that will get girls back in school and, ultimately, increase the employment rate.

We created GirlStuff.Period to provide 2500 girls, every semester, with underwear and reusable menstrual pads, so they can stay in school and become employed. GirlStuff.Period also employs 10 women full time to make reusable menstrual pads and underwear. GirlStuff.Period has employed 5 girls in 2018 and will increase in employment of 20% per year. In 2018, we have delivered 5,000 pads per semester and, therefore, were able to give girls an education and break the poverty cycle.

By producing bricks for supply to wholesalers, we expect to see employment in the community of Bergnek increase by 5% (90 jobs), over the year following the establishment of the business and related businesses. Due to brick selling, the community will be able to build houses for 600 people at a cost 30% less than what the regional government offered for the same job. The houses in the community are also built from clay bricks, which are made for tough weather in South Africa.

This is a continuing effort by our partners on the ground to ensure we reach every school within the areas we serve in, to ensure every child is provided with high quality education to help avoid the next generation of child laborers and high illiteracy rates.

We have received nutrition to be provided to these children, through Corporate Social Responsibility that were specifically designed by dietitians after studying the student’s lifestyles and receiving input from social workers and doctors. It is very rich in nutrients to help combat the challenges of malnourishment. 1kg of this all natural formulation will feed a child for a month.

By providing a healthcare clinic within the community to support basic healthcare for pre- and post-natal care, birthing support and children, the community will not have to suffer the loss of more children due to the distance from other clinics and hospitals.
Having a clinic in the community provides healthcare to 1,800 community members of which 1,200 are women and children. It also helps to ensure that the 50 new children born in the community each year, arrive safely and have the services needed to keep them healthy.

TRH is involved in education projects in high-needs communities in developing countries. Understanding the dynamic between gender, education and poverty is crucial to our work. Data helps to confirm anecdotal evidence, and it guides our thinking in directing funds to where they are needed most.

TRH will be working with cooperatives to register wives as well as husbands – making the women more visible, giving them more of a voice in how the organization is run and making it easier to provide them with services. This is a cultural shift brought about through engagement, education and consistent communication. The initial results have been very encouraging. The women are making more money, enabling them to send their children to school and build capacity in their communities. Women invest 90% of their earnings back into their families and communities.
