Feel Good Friday!
ANEW Recipient: Children's Home Society of South Dakota (CHSSD)

Today we're celebrating a feel-good moment that's making a real difference for kids in South Dakota!

Children's Home Society of South Dakota is doing incredible work — providing residential treatment for children with behavioral needs, as well as additional programs supporting its mission to prevent, treat and heal trauma. As part of residential treatment, kids are served meals in their dining hall from a full staff of dedicated cooks.

Through ANEW's Surplus Stewardship program, CHSSD recently received metal cooling racks, under-the-counter fridges, and metal shelving — all items that might have otherwise gone to waste.

“This generous donation of equipment will be used to improve efficiency and capabilities in our kitchen!” —CHSSD Staff

We love seeing surplus find purpose, and we love even more knowing it's supporting organizations like this that show up for children every single day. That's the power of Surplus Stewardship!

The future of ANEW just got a little brighter!
We're proud to announce Soham Patel as our newest Board Member.

Soham brings a rare blend of expertise across sustainability, public policy, and the built environment. Educated in architecture but now engaged in the climate crisis, their work imagines more resilient futures though nature-based solutions for wildfires and rainstorms, incorporating future climate projections in project approaches, and working to help advance a circular and bio-based material economy — the kind of thinking that defines where our industry needs to go. They bring this vision to life as part of the team at PRACTICE in Pasadena, CA, a studio dedicated to co-creating environments that effect social change through design. Outside of work, you'll find them biking the hills of Los Angeles or turning recycled fabrics into homemade quilts.

As an emerging professional, Soham embodies the essence of sustainable leadership, striking the balance between analytics and creativity. They hold a commitment to advance our "Next 20" vision well into the future.

Welcome to the board, Soham. Alongside our newly announced Board Chair, Brett Shwery, this is a team built for the future!

ANEW Recipient: Palisades Charter High School

When Palisades Charter High School lost 40% of its campus in the California wildfires last January, 2,500 students needed a new learning space with the spring semester just days away.

ANEW arranged the donation of thousands of dollars’ worth of furniture to the High School during this critical time of need. Working alongside Gensler and C.W. Driver Companies, with support from the City of Santa Monica, our donation helped transform the Sears building in downtown Santa Monica into a fully functioning temporary campus in record time. A special thank you to Joanne Forsyth from Blackman & Forsyth for connecting us with the school and making this donation possible.

We're honored to have supported the Pali High community throughout their rebuilding process.
EXCITING NEWS!! students are heading back to their high school later this month!

ANEW Recipient: Mission Centers of Houston

ANEW is pleased to support Mission Centers of Houston (MCH) which provides resources and training to small local churches and organizations located in impoverished communities throughout Houston, Texas.

Through our Surplus Stewardship® program, MCH received commercial refrigerators and freezers which enabled them to accept and store food donations for their Compassion Center ministry which offers food pantries and emergency food assistance.

“Every piece of equipment we received was in working order and we now have freezer and cooler space. Shortly after we received these items, we were able to secure food donations, and before you knew it, we had them filled with a variety of fresh and frozen foods to share with our partners. It has helped us expand our ministry offerings in a new way, and we are deeply grateful for ANEW for providing them to us.”

MCH provides for the physical and spiritual needs of people living in Houston’s inner city. They empower children and adults through Christ-centered programs aimed at providing food security, homeless assistance, educational and recreational programs, spiritual development, coordination of long-term disaster recovery services, and community development initiatives.

ANEW Recipient: Cornerstone Housing for Women

ANEW is thrilled to have been able to support Cornerstone Housing for Women , the largest women-only shelter and housing provider for women experiencing homelessness in Ottawa, Canada.

Through our Surplus Stewardship® program, they received multiple commercial refrigerators and kitchen shelving which enabled them to allocate needed funds to their kitchen meal plans and ensure easier meal production and service.

Each day, Cornerstone Housing for Women prepares and serves 750 meals across their programs — including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Staff and volunteers on their dedicated Food Services Team work hard to ensure that individuals using their programs have access to nutritious and comforting meals.

Each year, more than 1,300 women experience homelessness in Ottowa. Through their four housing residences, emergency shelter, and outreach program, Cornerstone Housing for Women strives every day to fill the gap in their city by offering women-centered, women-only programs and services to all women and gender-diverse individuals, with dignity and without judgment. ANEW is proud to have been a part of an expert panel discussion on Sustainability in Demolition earlier this month in San Diego, CA. We joined industry leaders from Casper Company, Armstrong Ceilings, and Shaw Contract for an insightful and engaging discussion on the demolition process and sustainable building practices. These conversations are essential as we continue to build pathways towards a more circular economy.

Special thanks to IIDA SoCal for hosting the event and to Katie Hendrix of MillerKnoll and Angel Gutierrez, President and Owner, CA Office Interiors. (CA Office Interiors is a premiere, western regional and certified decom/FF&E labor resource that has partnered with ANEW for over 12 years!)

Our Story

Our core practice is Surplus Stewardship™, turning surplus furniture, fixtures, equipment and architectural materials from decommissioned commercial space into valuable community assets. This practice helps non-profits, charities, schools, police & fire stations and public agencies continue their good work in the community; it also diverts over 3 million pounds from landfill every year.
