We look forward to seeing you all on Sunday 22 October for the camp office work party in Valencia.

Planned projects include water, paint, dust, dirt, plants, other things. Dress to get dirty. The project you will undertake depends on the size, the skills, and the available tools/materials. This is going to be a fun Work Party!

Some of us will be starting the day early around 0830 but most plan to join closer to 10.

Lunch and Dinner will be provided.

We are not extending the invitation to minors who are not with their adult Pyles alumni. A brief chat will be given around dinner updating everyone on upcoming events.

Reach out to Smiley! If you have any additional questions.

Dear Alumni,
In about 10 days, Pyles Camp will be dedicating and naming the kitchen in honor of Nana. I'm seeking help in putting together a video to share at the ribbon cutting.
Please consider shooting a short video (~30 seconds) that answers the question "What does Nana mean to you?" and uploading it here:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1pTgyZuNQO6Bfxoadqv2n0K_t30C4lsmN?usp=sharing
This video will be shown to all in attendance, including members of Nana's family, alumni, and our Session 4 campers.
Please submit by this Sunday to be included at the ribbon cutting.
Thanks!

It is with great sadness we share that Rose Urbina “Nana” was called to heaven. For nearly 50 years, Nana cooked with love for a countless number of campers and staff or “her boys” as she would say.

Nana was introduced to camp in 1958 by Babaluchi. When she met Mr. Pyles he told her to feed these boys. She work tirelessly to accomplish Mr. Pyles’ dream until her retirement in 2008. She was loved by all and will live on in our memories.

“Nana, Nana, listen while we sing to you...”

Keeping the dream alive

R.M. Pyles Boys Camp believes in a racially just society and that
human rights should be equal for all. While we strive to achieve this idyllic atmosphere during our camp programs, achieving this same progress in society is more challenging. We stand in support with those of you who are working constructively to make positive changes in your communities and oppose racial injustices.

If I were to remain silent, I'd be guilty of complicity."
- Albert Einstein

For too long, we have remained silent. For too long, we have let
the systems of oppression go unchallenged. For too long, we have let racism pass. Today, we must end our silence. We must end our silence, and speak for those who were silenced. We must end our silence for George Floyd, for Breonna Taylor, for Ahmaud Arbery, for our fellow Black Americans.

Black Lives Matter.

For 70 years, we have asked each camper to accept challenges, to work together, to be better. Today we accept the challenge to be better. Today we ask our society to work together to be better. Today we ask you, be better. Speak out with love against hate. Act with peace against violence. Challenge bigotry when you are confronted with it.

We look forward to standing with our community partners to build a better tomorrow.

Tough decision! But we will keep the dream alive!

To the R.M. Pyles Boys Camp Family,

Please read this important announcement concerning 2020 summer programming.

https://www.pylescamp.org/news/2020/4/10/important-announcement-concerning-2020-summer-programming

To the R.M. Pyles Boys Camp Family,

The Staff and Board of R.M. Pyles Boys Camp have made the difficult decision to cancel our youth development programs located at the camp for the summer of 2020 due to concerns surrounding the Coronavirus. This was a heartbreaking decision to make, but one that is necessary. We will be back stronger than ever in 2021!

There are a few major factors at play:

-California state and local regulations do not allow us to operate as our program is not deemed an “essential” service, and we do not have a date in sight of when these regulations may be lifted.
-Camp is built on being close together, socially, physically, and emotionally.
-Holding large group gatherings goes against all guidance from authoritative sources including the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the California Governor’s Executive Order surrounding Social Distancing.
-The current challenges we face are beyond our control.

When we make challenging decisions such as this, it’s important to look back at our mission statement:

R.M. Pyles Boys Camp promotes long-term positive behavioral change for low-income, disadvantaged boys by providing a multi-year wilderness camp experience supplemented by year-round mentoring that builds life skills and instills the values of hard work, education, and positive choices.

In the interest of public health, we simply cannot provide our summer wilderness camp experience. What we can do, however, is increase our efforts to provide “year-round mentoring that builds life skills and instills the values of hard work, education, and positive choices.” We will do this. Our team is currently developing a plan that will give more ongoing support to our current program participants than they’ve ever received.

We will look to the future with a sense of hope and optimism, knowing that in the very near future there will be a group of campers stepping off the bus in the Sequoia National Monument for the very first time. To those boys, we say thank you for your patience and we cannot wait to have you join the Pyles family in 2021.

In the words of Robert M. Pyles, we will spend our next few months supporting “…the poor and needy, the underprivileged children, whose bodies are undernourished, whose thoughts are clouded by fear, whose hearts are heavy from lack of love and understanding—- to find and rebuild them into healthier and happier generations of Americans, firmly endowed with the ideals and principles of our freedom loving country.”

Sincerely,

The R.M. Pyles Boys Camp Staff and Board of Directors
