Deaf communities are often left out of disaster recovery efforts and face additional barriers in accessing timely support. The aftermath of Hurricane Melissa impacted Jamaica’s Deaf community far beyond immediate relief needs. While our response began with distributing several tons of aid including food packages, hygiene care, solar lights, and other relief supplies - many homes that remained standing still suffered significant damage.

Our short-term efforts have evolved into longer-term recovery support - providing tarps to protect homes from rainfall while conducting contractor assessments to approve repair plans in partnership with contractors from Food For The Poor Jamaica. These photos show our Deaf-led team engaging with Deaf families and closing communication gaps during damage assessments, ensuring contractors have the information needed to accurately plan and carry out repairs.

🧩 IT’S NOT AID IF IT CAN’T GET THERE.

But how do we identify and collect the aid, package it, and transport it QUICKLY? How do we navigate inflation, borders, legalities, obstructed terrain and infrastructure? What about aid with expiration dates compounded by extreme temperature conditions affecting food and equipment? How do we ensure aid and supplies remain secure and out of harms way amidst a crisis every step of the way?

There is much more happening behind the scenes, but in our work, only the final result matters: when the aid arrives, if it doesn’t, if it already expired before it does, how many lives were saved.

With the surge in gang violence, now taking control over approximately 100% of the region where we operate in Haiti, Deaf people living in isolation continue to be relying on Off-The-Grid Missions’ operations for food relief, medical support, emergency evacuations, communication access, healthcare, and much more. However, even when DeafDisabled Elders receive food resources, they do not have the strength to care for themselves in the most basic ways required to survive, which includes walking distances to collect heavy buckets of water, making a fire, and preparing food.

⛑️ So we have expanded our relief program to assign individuals from the community to prepare and deliver hot meals with the food relief we provide.

Note that while the living conditions are dire, we are limited in how we can help without further targeting Deaf people in this region with theft and extreme violence.

Not only is Off-The-Grid Missions working to provide humanitarian aid to individuals cut-off from it, but ensuring the aid provided fits the wide spectrum of needs when it comes to ACCESSIBLE AID.

Solar lights distributed to people with disabilities such as Deaf people who rely on light to communicate, require a variety of light features such as the blinking, red light, white light, bright and low settings. Thanks to our partner we are expanding our solar aid distribution efforts to include solar lights that are accessible to people with mobility needs and limb differences as well.

OTG has been evacuating Deaf pregnant women out of high-risk areas (active shooting and inhumane conditions) to receive safe and accessible emergency births, medical and post natal care, food, and more. 100% is paid for by donations.

The Deaf Community in Haiti is incredibly isolated, surrounded by gangs and living in harsh conditions. Hundreds of Deaf families (up to 1,000 people) rely on our organization for food, hygiene, medical, evacuations, and much more. Electricity is incredibly challenging as Deaf people communicate in Sign Language and also become greater targets for violence at night.

We were recently made aware of David and his family’s need for light, this video is David at our basecamp where we supplied him with 3 solar lights.

Today marks 1 year anniversary responding to the wildfires in LA. This clip is a 98 year old Deaf woman who was part of our phase three response which extended resources into surrounding Los Angeles regions as a preventive measure, positioning supplies and tools in case fire conditions intensified or shifted ensuring continuity of access where traditional systems remained unreliable.
OTG’s response unfolded in three phases.

You can now access all phase of our response in our Year In Review 2025 now live on our website at www.offthegridmissions.org
