An individual from the public was in disbelief when he saw our convoy with mattresses stacked well beyond the height of our vehicle, he captured the moment and shared it with a humorous soundtrack. Our vehicle and team were headed to deliver humanitarian aid to Deaf and Disabled people/families living in displacement camps.

Our team at Off-The-Grid Missions pre-positioned aid (solar lights, hygiene materials, etc) in Bogota several months before the devastating earthquake in Colombia. Now, while Deaf people/families and Deaf schools impacted can begin recieving this much needed aid, there is still great need for help ahead. We are responding in Colombia and in Venezuela.

Our trusted team is ensuring aid directly reaches Deaf communities cut-off from it. These distributions are happening as a result of the recent earthquakes, which caused dozens of Deaf people and families to lose their homes.

We’re continuing to work to get vital aid directly to Deaf families in Venezuela, including mattresses, food, mosquito nets, and other essential supplies to help them through this difficult time. At the same time, we are working with Deaf groups in Colombia to assist across the border after already sending pre-positioned aid.

Off-The-Grid Missions is the only international disaster response organization for Deaf people and is currently responding for the Deaf Community in Colombia. Fortunately, we had pre-positioned aid there a few months ago before the earthquake, and that aid is now being distributed —but clearly much more aid is needed. Some behind-the-scenes from the different distributions happening as a result of the recent earthquakes, which caused dozens of Deaf people and families to lose their homes.

As we have been working to provide vital humanitarian aid to dozens of Deaf individuals and families in La Guaira, Venezuela, Colombia was suddenly impacted by another devastating earthquake. Colombia’s earthquake has destroyed Deaf families homes and a Deaf school.

Our response is now swiftly expanding across these two neighboring regions, where Deaf communities need access to food, clean water, hygiene supplies, bedding, tarps and other emergency needs.

Donated United miles will help Off-The-Grid Missions sustain rapid disaster response efforts for Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, DeafBlind, and DeafDisabled communities worldwide. Millions of Deaf and Disabled people remain excluded from accessible emergency systems and life-saving resources during disasters and humanitarian crises. 

Support helps deploy OTG response teams into disaster-stricken and high-risk regions to provide humanitarian aid, emergency evacuations, medical support, accessible emergency communications, and critical survival resources for communities often left behind during crises. Miles also support OTG’s global response readiness through Deaf-led emergency coordination, field logistics, training, and deployment readiness efforts that help ensure faster and more effective emergency response.

Update from OTG Venezuela as dozens of Deaf families, including dozens of children, lost their homes and are now living in makeshift tents and cardboard boxes. OTG is providing much needed aid to support the different needs—food, hygiene, solar light, and more.

The 7.5 earthquake in Venezuela left dozens of Deaf people and their families displaced - losing their homes, and surviving in tents. Of those who survived, their belongings consist of only the items they were wearing at the time they evacuated. Many without mobile phones to communicate, which is already a barrier when Deaf people are first to be cut off from information and last to receive humanitarian aid.

The Deaf community is in need of food, hygiene care, women menstrual kits, mattresses, solar light to communicate in sign language, cooking aid, medicines, toys for the children, and more. Off-The-Grid Missions has been working to support in a number of these ways. To join this effort, you can donate or start a fundraiser at www.offthegridmissions.org.
