WEBSITE SPOTLIGHT: County Locality Guides ๐Ÿ—บ

Researching in Sussex County is NOT the same as researching in Cape May. Records were kept differently, courthouses burned, boundaries shifted, and collections landed in different archives.

That's why GSNJ created County Locality Guides โ€” your roadmap to the records, repositories, and resources for each New Jersey county.

Which NJ county holds your family's story? Find your guide on our website.

The collection includes 24 narratives collected and edited by Margaret Jordan Johnson as part of the WPA Slave Narratives project. Most of the individuals interviewed were living in Augusta, Georgia, at the time of the interviews.

Some of Johnsonโ€™s copies differ from the published WPA narratives, including variations in annotations and editorial treatment. These differences may help researchers examine not only the experiences documented in the interviews, but also how the narratives were recorded, edited, and presented.

The collection also includes two newspaper clippings about Johnson and the WPA Slave Narratives project.

The collection is open for research at the Georgia Archives. Researchers are encouraged to submit a request through Ask an Archivist before visiting so staff can confirm the materials and provide any additional guidance.

โ€œIโ€™m Nigerian, and I also have African American cousins who want to know more about their ancestry. So family history is an opportunity to help my community.

"Iโ€™m really inspired by my dad. Because his father died in the war, he had to go through poverty. And he spent all his life trying to make a living. He sponsored all his younger brothers to go to school while he didn't go to school. He kept on working.

"When he was about 40 years old, he decided to go to school to get his college degree. And then he got his degree, and I could vividly remember going to school, and then my dad was also going to school as well. Now, I can add what I know about my dad to FamilySearch so that his legacy can be remembered.

"Family history renewed my confidence in myself, renewed my knowledge about my ancestors and the kind of strengths they possessedโ€”the kind of feats they accomplished during their lifetime. This has given me the courage and the confidence and the belief that I can actually do difficult things. I can achieve great things in life and leave a legacy for my descendants."โ€”Chukwudi
