Featured in Voice of OC: The Importance of Black Infant Health OC

Black Infant Health OC was created to address persistent maternal and infant health disparities and to provide a space where Black parents feel seen, heard, and supported throughout pregnancy and early parenthood. Over the past year, families participated in support groups, health education, care coordination, and community-building activities designed specifically to meet their needs. Many participants shared that these services filled a gap that had not been met elsewhere.

We remain deeply committed to advancing equity for Black families in Orange County and are grateful to everyone who continues to support, advocate for, and invest in this important work.

There's a truth we aren't naming loudly enough:

Corporate formula companies are increasingly positioning themselves as champions of moms, wrapping profit-driven agendas in the language of support, empowerment, and care.

And we need to talk about it.

Happy Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month! This is a time to celebrate the rich diversity of these communities, which are too often overlooked in public health.

We see this play out in infant feeding and maternal health specifically.

Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders have distinct cultural practices, histories, and languages. But they are frequently grouped under one broad β€œAANHPI” category. This aggregation hides important disparities, erases cultural differences, and impacts how resources and support are distributed.

BreastfeedLA is committed to helping change this narrative by advocating for equity-centered approaches, hosting support groups, and backing efforts that recognize the specific needs in Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.
